My A/C isn't cooling! It's not blowing warm yet, just not what I have it set at.?

My husband is out of town and I have it set on 70, but it's nearing 80 in here. We have turned the fan off or on, instead of auto before and that kicked it into gear and it started cooling again. Does this help? I can't remember what he did!

The evaporator coil may be icing up therefore blocking the airflow.

Check to see if the air filter is dirty. Try installing a fiberglass filter they let more air flow over the coil and help reduce icing. Some of those high efficiency fiber filters actually don't allow enough air to flow over the coil and it ices up.

If these things don't help then your system might be low on refrigerant or your evaporator coil might have some sort of a restriction. You will have to call in a tech to troubleshoot these things.
Reply:it may be froze up from being low on freon. go to your unit and see if it has ice on it or in it. if it does turn it off so it will defrost and it may work again.
Reply:Yep ditto other post it may be a leak, meaning low on refrigerant or maybe just a bad thermostat, or backed up drain line if you dont maint. system regularly

In all cases there is nothing that you can do yourself if it is one of the above, other than call a contractor.
Reply:If the fan is in the "off" position, the a/c won't come on. If in the "on" position, the fan will run full-time and the a/c will come on and off as called for. In auto, the fan will come on with the a/c unit.

If the outdoor unit is running, you should go to the air handler and feel the bigger of the two copper pipes coming in from the outside unit. If it is not cold to the touch, something is wrong with the system.

As another poster noted, a ball of ice on the suction line would indicate an aiflow or refrigerant charge problem as well.
Reply:Maybe a defective thermostat. ~
Reply:It may need a freon recharge or replacement.
