Is this Minimization problem set up correctly?

Here's the question:

A restaurant wants to hire cooks and waiters at a minimum wage cost. The average monthly salary of a cook is $2000 and the average monthly salary of a waiter is $800. The restaurant can accomodate up to 25 staff and needs at least 20 to run properly. They must have at least 9 waiters, and may have up to 6 waiters for every 4 cooks. How many cooks and how many waiters should the camp hire to minimize cost?

Here's my equation to set it up:

c = # of cooks

w = # of waiters

c+w =%26lt; 25

c+w =%26gt; 20

w =%26gt; 9

6w =%26lt; 4c

Cost = C = 2000c + 800w

Then I did the Minimization Simplex method and placed all of these formulas in the simplex tableau, but I keep going around in circles and receiving negatives at the bottom of the tableau. What have I done wrong?

Is this Minimization problem set up correctly?
Your equation for "up to 6 waiters for every 4 cooks" is wrong. It should be 4w ≤ 6c (from w≤ 6(c/4)), or 6c - 4w ≥ 0

Proof with set laws?

use only the set laws, to prove the following result for all sets A,B, C:

(A - B) - C = A - ( B u C )

( the u on the right hand side is a union symbol)

Proof with set laws?
I'll use u to denote the union (as you have). I'll use ^ to denote the intersection of two sets, and I'll use a small c to denote the complement of a set (for example, Ac will mean the complement of A).

(A - B) - C = (A ^ Bc) - C (definition of set difference)

(A ^ Bc) - C = (A ^ Bc) ^ Cc (definition of set difference)

(A ^ Bc) ^ Cc = A ^ (Bc ^ Cc) (associativity of intersection)

A ^ (Bc ^ Cc) = A ^ (B u C)c (DeMorgan's Law)

A ^ (B u C)c = A - (B u C) (definition of set difference).

I hope this is of some help to you.

How do you calculate the variance and standard deviation of PI using C++?

after setting a C++ program to estimate the value of PI using the Monte Carlo random numbers method, how can you modify the code to calculate the variance and the standard deviation of PI?

How do you calculate the variance and standard deviation of PI using C++?
From this site:

http://www.eveandersson.com/pi/monte-car...

Using the Monte Carlo method you end up with this calculation:

pi = (4*M)/N

where

M = number of points inside the circle

N = number of total points used

From Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_de...

Suppose we wished to find the standard deviation of the set of the numbers 4 and 8:

Step 1: find the arithmetic mean (or average) of 4 and 8

(4 + 8) / 2 = 6

Step 2: find the difference between each number and the mean

4 − 6 = −2

8 − 6 = 2

Step 3: square each of the differences

(−2)^2 = 4

(2)^2 = 4

Step 4: sum the obtained squares

4 + 4 = 8.

Step 5: divide the sum by the count of numbers (here we have two numbers)

8 / 2 = 4

-- So, the variance is 4 --

Step 6: take the non-negative square root of the quotient

sqrt(4)=2

-- So, the standard deviation is 2 --

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance, so step 5 produces the variance and step 6 produces the standard devation.

What you need to do:

1) Calculate the value of PI using increasing numbers of points and store each result. So, try 100 points, then 200 points, then 300 points, etc... and build up an array of different values for pi.

2) Write a function to calculate the variance and standard deviation. You'll need to pass in your pi array and then follow the above formula in a loop for each value.

Hope this helps!

Find a new set of integers.?

Suppose a,b,c are distinct integers. Define a new set of integers, called the "sugmented set of { a,b,c }" by constructing {ab+c, ac+b, bc+a, a(b+c), b(a+c), c(a+b)}. What set {a,b,c} has its augmented set {25,29,79,36,91,99}?

Find a new set of integers.?
ab+bc=91

ab+c=25

therefore bc-c=66

c(b-1)=66

c=11 or 6

b= 12 or 7

If c = 11, then b = 7, and a = 2 (ab+c=25 =%26gt; 7a+11=25)

I got an answer from XLman telling me to dump everything in C:documents and setting, etc. There is no place?

There is no place to dump C:documents and settings, etc. There is no place to type in anything. Would XLman please clarify? Thank you so very much.

I got an answer from XLman telling me to dump everything in C:documents and setting, etc. There is no place?
What XLMan wanted you to do is to clear your temporary files to see if that helped with your Yahoo Messenger issue. If you open My Computer on your desktop, double click on C: then on Documents and Settings. Look for your folder in this next window - if you normally log in with a specific user name, double click on it. Then, double click on Local Settings, and then double click on Temp. Select everything (hit Ctrl+A) and then delete everything. If you're not sure of your login situation, you can probably go through all of the folders that shows up when you look at Documents and Settings.

If that doesn't help, you can always try to uninstall Yahoo Messenger. Leave it uninstalled if you don't use it, but if you want to reinstall it, make sure you download the latest version and take notes if anything else strange happens to your computer.

Prove if true or give a counter example if false: For all sets A,B and C , A * (B U C) = (A* B) U (A* C):?
Well, if by "*" you mean intersection, its true.

Here's an informal proof. Suppose A is just those elemenst in A alone, B in B alone, C in C alone, AB those in A and B but not C, etc.

So A*(BuC) = AB and AC and ABC

A*B = AB and ABC

A*C = AC and ABC

So A*B u A*C = AB and AC and ABC

Thermostat for C200 Matic '96. Which is the best temperature setting for this thermostat? 71 C, 87 C or what?

Sometime, mostly vendors offer the thermostat with setting temp of 71 C instead of (higher than this or 87 C). Based on the reference I got, the current engine (newer not old engine) will run in better performance when apply the higher range of this thermostat i.e. 82 C to 91 C. Beside that, combustion will be more effisien and redue the polutant. Would you please tell us about the proper thermostat temp setting selection? thx.

The answer would depend on the type of sets you're dealing wtih along with the definition of "multiply". But generally, this equation is true for most sets you will deal with.

C++, unsure if setting values correctly, and if inheritance is being used correctly?

Here's the code I have so far. I figure my professor wants me to set the values to make the private data accessible. The setFields() method is giving me errors but I'm not sure how to correct it.

void displayNumPages();

};

void Book::setFields()

{

char t[80], a[80];

title[80]=t[80];

author[80]=a[80];

}

C++, unsure if setting values correctly, and if inheritance is being used correctly?
For one, you don't have a type defined for what the varialbe "table" is. Some C++ compilers allow this, others do not.

What are you trying to accomplish in setFields()? How do you want to data to be accessible?

By the sounds of the problem, and because you're using inheritance, I suspect he wants you to use the 'protected' modifier, rather than public or private. Declaring the variables in the Book base call 'protected' will mean that they will be accessible from all derived classes (i.e. all classes that inherit from Book).

C++, unsure if setting values correctly, and if inheritance is being used correctly?
Let's say you want to call the setFields() method from outside the Book class, and you want to pass in the values for t and a, which you will assign to the title and author data members. The setFields() method needs to take t and a as parameters like this:

void Book::setFields(char[80] t, char[80]a)

This means that when you call the setFields function, you need to pass it two char arrays for the values of t and a. You won't need this line:

char t[80], a[80]

anymore because those arrays were declared automatically in the first line of the method definition. The rest of what you have in the method is correct.
Reply:insted of inheritance public book try private book

class Fiction:private Book

i hope it works
Reply:you cannot assign array elements to another array using the implementation you are using in the setFields method. you will need to utilize loops to achieve this, good luck.

What is the risk of moving my C: Program Files folder to D: drive?

I have the Big Fish game manager with a lot of games supported by it. I didn't know this at the time, but when my hard drive started to get too full, I realized that it installs games to C: drive. (I set my exe. files up to go to D: but unbeknownst to me, they install to C). I can't reconfigure this player (Big Fish tech support confirmed this) and my games (about 20 of them, paid for) depend on keeping the player.

Big Fish also told me that while the player sends games to the Program Files folder, it doesn't matter where that folder is.

So theoretically I could move the Program Files folder to D: drive, along with the bulky game downloads...and they would play.

Games are a big part of my computer time, but I don't want to mess around and ruin anything else in the computer by doing this...make other programs unusable or damage them because I do need the computer for other things.

What is the risk of moving my C: Program Files folder to D: drive?
If you move C:\Program Files to D: (should the system let you), I guarantee you'll regret it big time. Lots of things use Program Files (just browse through it and see -- Look but don't touch), and if you move it or rename it, they may not know where to find what they're looking for.

Sorry to disappoint.
Reply:I have run into something similar. I went with a 200gig drive and used the included CD to mirror the C:\ to the 200gig as slave. Power down. Unplug it all. Master jumper pins on the 200gig. Put the D:/ back into the cabinet and everything works.

It is important that whatever mirror program you get runs the computer itself, without WIN running the computer. WIN blocks access to the Windows folder.
Reply:dunno what big fish is, assuming its online gaming.

if its online the biggest problem your gunna run into is if the game tried loading flash or something and looks for the app in a local folder (i.e., in your windows folder) and it doesnt find anything. it may just have your reinstall java or flash, but doubt this is the case

if its a local game then i would leave it on C. games and other programs often make calls to other apps on the computer, and it almost always defaults to look on C for what it needs
Reply:You could loose all that is stored in both

Is a/c necessary in San Francisco?

I am moving to San Francisco from the south and I am very spoiled by climate control My a/c is usually set at 65 degrees at night and low 70's/high 60's in the day. I haven't found an apartment with climate control...is it necessary?

Is a/c necessary in San Francisco?
Nope, well it depends on where in the San Francisco Bay Area you are moving to. If you are moving to SF proper or anywhere in the Northbay near the Pacfic ocean than no. If your moving to eastern Alameda or Eastern Contra Costa Counties than definatly. Santa Clara/San Jose area gets really warm too. Anywhere right by the Bay or Ocean, AC is not required. If you live on the opposite side of the hills than 100% u need it.

SF, as a city, is very cool and it only gets to 75-80 degrees on the warmest days of the year. Almost all the other days it is somewhere between 40-65. It is plesant and cool, espcially when the fog moves in. AC can be used, but in SF it is a waste. I live across from the city so yeah.
Reply:Not at all. If anything you'll just need a good heater.
Reply:In the city, its generally mild at night (rarely ever drops below the high 40's) and cool in the day (again, it's rare to see high 80s - 90s), so many apartments don't carry A/C.

However, the natural A/C is really a phenomenon limited to the city center. The issue of climate control becomes a more serious concern if you're staying in the suburbs, where the weather is more typical of California.

Temperatures can become oppressively hot in the summer. It is not uncommon to see almost the entire Bay Area (except for San Francisco and a few coastal communities) top 100 degrees for what seems like forever in July and August.

If you're not looking in SF County or near the water, I would definitely bring up with issue of A/C with the landlord.
Reply:I dunno...I say yes, but that's because I'm a sucker for perfect climate.
Reply:Depending on your comfort range AC may be an issue. I'd be more inclined to get an oxygen tank I could have easy access to, and a mask attached.

You obviously enjoy it chilly, even indoors, though effficiency certainly is compromised in external temp influences on your dwelling.

It does get warm in San Fran.

Reply:Not if you are outside.
Reply:NO!! We never use it.
Reply:no. no one has it. A mechanical engineer just ran calculations on a project of mine. In hunters point. among the warmest neighborhoods. and determined that 2 days a year would be to warm... draw the shades or go out and enjoy the weather... If those even happen when your not at work...
Reply:California does have the stereotype of being warm and sunny. The first time I went to San Francisco, the hotel didn't have a/c. I asked the desk clerk what I was suppose to do if I got warm. He told me open a window. I was floored, but he was correct. Generally, it's cool all year around.

Window A/C out of Window?

Can you use a window A/C and just set it on the floor, or does it really need to be sitting in a window to work properly. Am considering getting one but it wont fit in my window. Thanks.

Window A/C out of Window?
No, it has to be vented outside, an a/c unit is a heat exchanger, for every degree that's taken out of the cool air hot air is released outside. if you were to try and run it inside it would pump cold air out of one side and hot out of the other, due to inefficiencies in the system your room would heat up rather than cool down.

Also they produce water, you'd end up with a wet floor.
Reply:yeah it needs to sit in your window for one good reason...draining.

there are some stores that offer single room air conditioners however that do sit on the floor...but you still have to run some hoses out the window.
Reply:Yes it must be out the window, to draw air and drain .
Reply:They make them all different sizes hon, find one that fits.
Reply:Window a/c must be installed in a window or thru the wall to the outside.. There are many sizes available that will fit most windows.

You need to shop around. Measure your window opening first and start looking.

Portable a/c units are also available that might work. Ask about them when you are shopping.
Reply:air conditioning is about removing heat from one location and disposing of it in a more desirable location, (like outside). condensor coil has to be vented outside or you are spinning your wheels. cool air added to space from the evaporator coil will equal the hot air removed from the condensor. oh and the heat from compressor so actually your living space would be warmer!

yeap, gotta mount her in a window!

Let f: R^+ maps to C^x be the map F(x)=e^ix. prove f is homomorphism & determine its kernal and image?

R is the set of all real numbers. the + means its closed under addition or its an addivitive group.

C is the set of complex numbers. x implies multiplication group. or closed under multiplication.

Let f: R^+ maps to C^x be the map F(x)=e^ix. prove f is homomorphism %26amp; determine its kernal and image?
F(x+y) = e^[i(x+y)] = e^(ix+iy) = (e^ix)(e^iy) = F(x)F(y), and thus

F is a homom.

Since |e^ix| = |cosx + isin x| = cos^2(x) + sin^2(x) = 1, the image of F is S^1 = the multiplicative sbgp. of C* of all complex numbers with module equal to 1.

Now, F(x) = 1 %26lt;==%26gt; e^ix = 1 %26lt;==%26gt; x = 2*Pi*k, with k an integer and Pi = 3.14159.... so:

Ker(F) = {2*Pi*k ; k an integer }

I live in s.c. its 107degrees,my a/c has not shut off,is this normal?

I have a 28X68 mobile home, with central a/c and its set at 70 degrees. it didnt shut off until 10pm last night. I change the filters regular.

I live in s.c. its 107degrees,my a/c has not shut off,is this normal?
Yes, that's normal. I am here in georgia, have the ac on 78 and it runs all day before shutting off
Reply:Most A/C systems are designed for a 20-25 degree difference in temperature. If it is 100 degrees outside and inside is 75 degrees it's doing the job. Yes, its normal.
Reply:There isn't an ac made that was designed to maintain 70deg in the summer. You need to get use to a higher setting. Keep raising the thermostat until it cycles once and a while.
Reply:At 107 degrees on a mobile home and with any humidity , it would not be unusal for your a/c to run well past midnight, you might want to clean the evapartor and condenser for maxium efficiency though.

Also make sure that your condensate drain line is not blocked by mold or algae.

Just remember its like your fridge keep the doors closed as much as possible that will help a lot at that temp.
Reply:First off

70 is to darn cold to be keeping your house in summer. Actually 70 is borderline freezing up your AC anyway. you should be running a coil temp above 40 F if the room is 70 and you have a 25degree temp drop the air coming out of your coil is 45 degrees which puts your coil about 35-38 ...thats too close to freezing . ANY problems will cause the coil to freeeze up and stop cooling alltogether. ALSO PLEASE

NOTE: Setting the thermostat to a colder temp will NOT make the AC cool more. It only lowers the temp the AC cuts off at. If your rooom starts off at 90 and you want to get to 78 setting at 78 will do it as fast as setting it at 70. the Temps below 70 are for HEATING not cooling. I advise people to set cooling temps at 78 and heating temps at 68

100 degrees out side you should be around 78 in the house . other wise it can make you sick..

NOW back to the question

YES its normal. Mobile homes are notorious for being hard to cool , not to mention many installers undersize the AC units. OR at leas sized it for more normal temps there.

when the temps outside get over 100 its harder on teh AC to do its job to begin with, and also the heat load on the house goes up. So you have 2 limiting factors on it.

To save some money try setting it to 78 and run a fan. also you can get a water hose and wash out the coils on the outside part of your AC . that is what condenses the freon back to a liquid and removes the heat from your house in the process. If that coil is dirty its less efficient and the AC has to work harder.
Reply:A properly sized AC unit should run almost continuously on the hottest day of the year to keep the inside at a comfortable temperature. If it is only running part time on the hottest day of the year, then it won't be running enough on cooler days to properly dehumidify your home. Of course if it is running full time on the hottest day of the year and you still aren't comfortable then there is a problem.
Reply:I have the same problem with my mobile home in California's Central Valley. It is normal. And be glad you don't live in Blythe, CA. It was 127 when I was there.
Reply:Unfortunately, I live in SC too and I am also dealing with this outrageous heat. My A/C is working overtime too. Best thing you can do is cut down on oven usage and long hot showers because they heat up the house and don't leave the door open long when going in and out.
Reply:Its 107 here also in Alabama. My ac has not shut off because

it is thermostat controlled. That means that it much reach, consistantly cool, and maintain a temperature of say, 78. Because it is so much warmer outside, It must work much harder to reach and keep that temp throughout. So it is staying on much longer than normal.

C drive defragmentation?

Now that I know what it is I'm not sure why mine won't. My C drive is set for defrag every Sunday aat 1:30 am. The problem is it never does. It will go for hours with that paper transfering folders symbol and always stay at 0% complete. Why is this?

C drive defragmentation?
A couple things about defrag.

#1 you need 20-25% free space for the machine to do the defrag. If you don't have the free space, defrag will do more harm than good.

#2 you need to run checkdisk before you do defrag. You should be able to look up check disk in windows help and learn how to do it, if you need help just click on my picture and email me. Be sure to remind me who you are and what you're trying to do as I get lots of email...
Reply:The speed of defrag varies widely. Usually it should be done within a couple of hours. But may take longer for high capacity drives. Before you defrag ensure that there are absolutely *NO* processes running in the background. Including Antivirus %26amp; Firewall software. The defrag process will *STOP* if any software interrupts the defrag program by trying to change the contents of the disk.

Better still, boot your computer in safe mode (Hit F8 continuously while your PC boots and select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu that appears) and defrag now. The safe mode ensures that most background programs are not run in the first place. Hence the defrag can go on without hassles.

If the speed is pathetic still, Try using some third party tool and see if that helps. Eg: Perferct Disk, Mst Defrag (www.mstsoftware.com), Norton's Speed Disk etc. Most of these are commerical software but a sharware version may be available.
Reply:Most of the time defrag wont go, is other items refresing or running in the background..so if it wont defrag normally , start your PC in safemode..F8 when booting...then go into defrag..it should complete it then with no problems.

!dea Vs Samsung C-110?

My brother is using my old Samsung C-110 mobile set. He is using !dea SIM which got free with my new Nokia 6030 Phone. Problem is that whenever he receives a call, the cell will get restarted automatically before completing the call. He replaced that 16K Sim with 32 K. Now the frequecy of the problem reduced, but still can't predict when this problem will happen.

We tested by interchanging our phones and SIMs. Now the problamatic !dea SIM is working fine with Nokia 6030 cell!

What is the solution set of 3x - 2y > 6?

The answer is one of the following

A.) (2 , - 3)

B.) a set of ordered pairs in a plane

C.) the empty set

D.) a boundary line

What is the solution set of 3x - 2y %26gt; 6?
B (any x %26gt; (6+2y)/3 would satisfy the equation)
Reply:The option A indicates that only the points x=2, and y=-3 can satisfy the equation, but any set of coordinates can satisfy the equation. Example: (6,1), (4,0), and so on. There are infinite possibilities that exist.

Therefore, any set of ordered pairs satisfy the equation. Correct Answer is 'B'.
Reply:Aaaaaa,

Reply:Noooo it's not A... B is the answer.

One Parabola For Each Value of c?

The equation y = x^2 + c defines a family of parabolas, one parabola for each value of c. On one set of coordinates axes, graph the members of the family for c = 0, c = 3 and c = -2.

One Parabola For Each Value of c?
Let us consider the parabola where c = 0

y = x^2

Let x = -2, -1, 0, 1 and 2.

We find y = 4, 1, 0 ,1 and 4 in that order.

Graph those points and you will get a basic parabola, a U shaped curve. As x continues to move to the right and left the cure should get steeper and steeper. (It does not curve back on itself as does a circle. You can also try substituting -3 and 3 for x.)

Having suggested that approach for y = x^2. You should use the same x values for:

y = x^2 -2 and y =x^2 +3. If you really want to understand this concept I would suggest you go a step further and try y = x^2 +1
Reply:Giving a representation of a graph, let alone a curved graph, on here as an answer is nigh impossible. However, you may see how they look at this website: http://www.calc5.com/#graph(x*x%2C%20x*x...

Prove FLT on a single page mathematicaly if a^n=c^2-b^2.for given a and n there are infinite sets of c and b.

if a^n=c^2-b^2

let b=c-a^R,where R is a random constant ranging from -infinity to +infinity.

putting the value of b in the equation we get

c=a^n+a^2R/2a^R %26amp; b=a^n-a^2R/2a^R.

putting n=2 %26amp; a as 3 and selecting R as 2 we get the famous equation

3^2+4^2=5^2.here selection of R must be done very carefully and as it ranges from -infinity to +infinity there are infinitely many solutions of c and b for a given a and n.

by giving a few more treatments to the above formula and by proving that there lies a common factor between a,b and c when a=b+c sir fermats last theorem can be proved very easily mathematically on a single sided page.

Prove FLT on a single page mathematicaly if a^n=c^2-b^2.for given a and n there are infinite sets of c and b.
you arguments are good, however i swear that proving FLT isn't so easy . the best will that you yourself prove FLT in a single page checking out every arguments.

after all it took 350 yrs to find a proof !!

keep on trying ,good luck.

Show by computing derivatives, that sin^2x=-1/2cos2x+c for some constant c. Find c by setting x=0?

I'm a little lost on how to approach this problem. Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys

Show by computing derivatives, that sin^2x=-1/2cos2x+c for some constant c. Find c by setting x=0?
Define function f(x)= sin^2(x)+ 1/2*cos(2x)

Compute its derivative

f'(x)=2sin(x)*cos(x) - 1/2*2*sin(2x) by the Power Rule/Chain Rule

Simplify f'(x) using trig identity sin(2x)=2sin(x)cos(x)

You get f'(x)=0

So f(x)=c for some constant c.

Since f(x) is constant it has the same value c for any x.

So f(0)=sin^2(x)+ 1/2*cos(0) =1/2 = c

I'm having the same problem as Charles C - problems setting up the Touch on my home router (WRT54G).?

Once entered, the device sees the SSID, indicates good signal strength, but Safari and iTunes Store return "cannot find server" when trying to connect. I have triple and quadruple-checked the password (for WPA encryption), ensured that DCHP is enabled. Not sure which IP/Subnet and DNS (if required?) to enter on the Touch from my router's status page. I will try temporarily removing security tonight to see if that helps. If anyone has other suggestions, I would appreciate it!

I'm having the same problem as Charles C - problems setting up the Touch on my home router (WRT54G).?
Well if you have a good strength and the password correct it still doesn't mean that you have internet access, it just means that you have a good connection from your computer to the wireless router. I will suggest to restore your router to default by pressing the reset button. Try first by doing it with no security at all, then when it works you should put the encryption.

After you restored your router, go to your computer and go to control panel - Network connection - right click your wireless connection icon - then select properties. The select TCP/IP and click on properties again. Make sure that is set for windows to choose your IP address.

After you have done that use any of your web browser to check if you have internet connection. It seems that you are using a Apple computer if i'm not mistaken since you are using Safari (Of course it doesn't mean that you cannot have safari in a PC) Anyways, another problem that you might have is the type of internet service that you have. Do you have DSL or Cable or something else????

If you have a broadband service it is for sure that the internet company have installed a modem in your house, Now days those modems comes with routing capabilities. If that is the case that modem might be doing DHCP and by default your linksys router does DHCP too so they would conflict with the IP addresses and no computer will know what IP address is assigned to them, so write me back telling me what kind of internet service you have and what brand and model is your modem.

In C:drive-documents and setting-i want to change the name of my folder how can i do that?

Iam using xp, in that c:drive-documents and setting there are 3 folders 1. administrator, 2.all users and name of my folder but i want to change the name of this folder.

When I rename it, mge appears we cannot change because it is sharing folder. But I have to change the name so badly.Is any one is there to help please.

In C:drive-documents and setting-i want to change the name of my folder how can i do that?
You really can't rename the folder without causing major issues. The folder needs to retain the name in order for that account to work properly. The easiest way to have a folder name of your choice in that directory is to have your computer administrator A) change your user-name (the folder will be renamed according to your user-name) or B) make a new account with the desired user-name. If you are the administrator of your computer then trying to change the name of the account first created is quite hard and trick A will not work, but B should work just fine (you'll need to transfer your "My Documents" folder if you want to keep your files). To clarify, when I mean the administrator of the computer I am referring to the person who first set up the computer plus its accounts and who had the first account. If you have administrator privileges and your are not the original account holder then both tricks should work.
Reply:I think it's because the folder name is based on your sign-in name for XP (like what you click to get onto your home screen, if that makes any sense.) I think that changing that name is the only way to change the name of your documents and settings folder. To do that you go to Control Panel %26gt; User Accounts %26gt; Change An Account %26gt; (your account) %26gt; Change My Name. I've not tested this method but it hypothetically should work. Hope this helps!
Reply:go to properties %26gt; sharing %26gt; and un-check share this folder

click apply and rename. it should work but WinXP might have a block on that folder. try it out!
Reply:I don't know if I can help you. In windows xp, if you rename a restricted folder windows needs in that directory, it will simply create a new folder replace the one you renamed.

Do you have it shared across the network? That shouldn't stop you from changing, just a warning message. Folder properties should tell you that much and allow you to disable it.

Nothing else comes to mind. Just remember that windows needs one folder corresponding to each user in that directory.
Reply:Dear,

it is the folder that which is using as system folder.

so if you want to change it. first login as administrator and delete the exitsing uers. creat as you want. this is inly the way...Try it...! Enjoy.
Reply:You can't rename it. If you must, you must change the name of the account that corresponds to that folder. To do that, press Start then Control Panel. Then click on User Accounts and User Accounts again. (In category View, for Classic, just click on User Accounts) Then click on the account that corresponds with the folder that you want to change the name. Click on that account and click on Change the name. Type in the name you want and click on Apply or OK. This should change the name of the folder under the directory of: C:\Documents and Settings.
Reply:Just right-click on the folder and scroll down to "rename". Just type in the name you want.

Hope that helps.

Oops. Just looked again. You are trying to change the name of a system file. Can't be done...sorry.

Let A, B, and C be sets, and let f:AarrowB and g:BarrowC be funtions. Prove or dis prove each of the following

If the composite function g o f: AarrowC is a surjection, then the function f:AarrowB is a surjection.

If the composite function g o f:AarrowC is a surjection, then the function g:BarrowC is a surjection.

Let A, B, and C be sets, and let f:AarrowB and g:BarrowC be funtions. Prove or dis prove each of the following
Let A = B = all non negative integers (it includes 0, although this does not matter).

Let C be the set {0,1}

f(a) = a - 10*INT(a/10)

in words: f(a) is the remainder when a s divided by 10.

if a is written in base 10, then f(a) is the lst digit.

example a = 734, then f(a) = 4

g(b) = b - 2*INT(b/2)

in words: f(b) is the remainder when b is divided by 2.

if b is even, g(b)=0; if b is odd, g(b)=1

Both functions are well-defined.

f:A--%26gt;B is not surjective,

yet g o f:A---%26gt;C is surjective.

-----

To prove the second one, I'd try to prove that g is not surjective even though g o f is surjective. This will lead to a contradiction.

Let A, B, C be sets. Prove that if A is a subset of B and B is a subset of C, then A is a subset of C.?

all the elements found in set A are found in set B if all the elements found in set B are found in set C therefore all the elements in set A which is a subset of set B are found in set C scince set B is a subset of of C

Let A, B, C be sets. Prove that if A is a subset of B and B is a subset of C, then A is a subset of C.?
B is a subset of C (B is included in C)

A is a subset of B (A is included in B)

If B is included in C, and A in B, then A is included in C
Reply:Using Venn diagram draw three loops loop represents set A inside loop represents set B which is in side loop represents set C ,then A inside C ,then A is subset of C.

Subtracting sets? What does something like [A and (B - C)] mean, where A, B, C are sets?

A, B, and C are sets.

A has yellow, purple, and blue.

B has yellow, green, and black.

C has green, orange, and brown.

The union of A and B is yellow, purple, green, blue, and black. That's the total of everything in A and B.

The intersection of A and B is yellow.

That's what A and B has in common.

Suppose we have B - C.

B has yellow, green, and black.

C has green, orange, and brown.

B - C is {yellow, green, black} - {green, orange, brown}.

What do B and C have in common? Green.

Thus,

B - C is {yellow, green, black} - {green}.

Now, B - C = {yellow, black}.

All I did was that I took away the green.

Orange and brown has no effect on B because B doesn't have orange and brown.

Subtracting sets? What does something like [A and (B - C)] mean, where A, B, C are sets?
The difference of sets, like B - C usually means in B, but not in C.

If D = B-C, the A and D usually means the intersection of A and D, or, in both A and D.
Reply:B - C is the set of all ements in B that are NOT in C

A and B-C is their interaction, the set of elements that's in both A and B-C
Reply:that means you find first the relative complement of C with respect to B. and you find the intersection of the resulting set to set A.

relative complement of C wrt B are the elements of set B not in set C

How can I change the setting of Hard drive (e.g. C) to 'open' by default when it is double clicked?

The default setting of my C: and D: drive is changed to be 'autoplay'.

How can I change the setting of Hard drive (e.g. C) to 'open' by default when it is double clicked?
It seems like your computer is infected with the virus.

here is the checklist to insure whether it is infected or not

Go to start %26gt;%26gt; Run%26gt;%26gt;cmd

on the prompt type cd\

you will get the default drive it may be C: or D:

again type attrib

this will display all the attributes of files including hidden files too.

Find the filename autorun.inf over there

type dir *.inf it will show you the all the inf files.

If you find autorun.inf file .Use this command

type autorun.inf

see whether if there is any things like wscript.exe or Ravmon.exe or any application ending with .exe

it is sure that your computer is effected with virus if you find any .exe over there.

If this is not case , your registry settings has been changed.

see if you can delete the autorun.inf file

del autorun.inf

if the above command deletes the autorun.inf file now the autoplay is gone on the drive.

before deleting use this command

attrib -a -r -s -h

and use the command

del autorun.inf

This will fix the autoplay for the Drive . if this doesnot fix, pls mail to me at info@hostyasui.com , I will provide you further support.

A-(BuC) = (A-B)n(A-C)?

a,b,c are sets. i know this is true but i'm needing some help coming up with the proof. any ideas or directions are greatly appreciated. thanks

A-(BuC) = (A-B)n(A-C)?
Whenever you're out to show the equivalence of two sets, you need to show that each is a subset of the other. So in our case, start with showing that A-(BuC) is a subset of (A-B)n(A-C), then vice versa.

To show that a set is a subset of another, we take any element from the first and show that it is also in the second.

So let x be in A-(BuC). Then (by def. of "-") x is in A and x is not in (BuC). Since x is not in BuC, x is not in B and x is not in C. Since x is in A but not B, x is in (A-B). Since x is in A but not in C, x is in (A-C). Since it's in both, it's in the intersection.

This argument shows that the first set is a subset of the second. This argument is nice because you can pretty much reverse its steps in building a proof that the second set is a subset of the first. After you've done this, you're done.

Help with C++ Program ?
..yikes, what are you trying to do!?

is it a program that takes C, converts it to F, and THEN adds 5 , or is it a program that displays the C temperature in F, in intervals of 5?

the latter sounds more reasonable, I guess...but ONE of your problems is that you are using your loop controls as variables to convert the temp, so after the firs time in your first for loop the variable goes to 6, the second time to 30, and then to 150!! don't use the F variable as loop control if it is for conversion, unless you are going to restore back its value after the conversion, in which case makes no sense...you should just use ANOTHER variable for loop control
Reply:Your temperatures should be floats.
Reply:sorry, i'm not entirely sure about what youre trying to do...

but to convert a temp C to F i would do this

int main (void)

{

double c, f;

cout%26lt;%26lt;"Enter a temperature in degrees Celsius: ";

cin%26gt;%26gt;c;

cout%26lt;%26lt;endl;

f = 9.0/5.0*c + 32;

cout%26lt;%26lt;c%26lt;%26lt;" degrees Celsius is equal to "%26lt;%26lt;f%26lt;%26lt;" degrees Fahrenheit.";

return 0;

}

If you're trying to make a scale of temperatures, something like

0C = 32F

5C = 41F

10C = 50F

15C = 59F

...one hundred times, make a loop that

-changes C to F

-prints value of C and F

-adds 5 to C

something like

double c = 0, f;

for(int loop = 0; loop %26lt; 100; loop++)

{

f = 9.0/5.0*c + 32;

cout%26lt;%26lt;c%26lt;%26lt;"C = "%26lt;%26lt;f%26lt;%26lt;"F"%26lt;%26lt;endl;

c += 5;

}

hope this helps you, good luck with the programming.

Reply:You need to initialise

int setsEntered=0

float average = 0; (This is incase you do 'D' before entering any scores!

float min = 0; and add a check in the while loop

if ((min == 0) || (score %26lt; min)) { /* Find Min Score*/

min = score;

}

scoresEntered is not used

You are defining total within the case block but it is NOT used.

Initialise the values before the while loop after the case 'e' so you don't have to manually clear them each time before entering a set of scores.

sum = 0;

min = 0;

max = 0;

i = 0;

Increment the setsEntered when you actually enter the sets

case 'e':

setsEntered++;

while (score) {

You need to change the while (score) to a

do {

}while(score);

As at the end for the first set score is set to 0 so it never enters the while loop again.

I think that is it.

Setting up the Borland C++ compiler?

When setting up Borland C++ compiler these instructions come up

Open a console box.

1. Start | Run...

2. Type "command" into the field [Enter]

My question is what is a console box and how do you open it???

Setting up the Borland C++ compiler?
It means using Windows Command Prompt to set Borland C++ Compiler.

So, Goto Start Menu, and click RUN

Type:

cmd

if the OS is XP or

command

if the OS is 98 or so

and then press [ENTER] Key

You will now get the console (Command Prompt).
Reply:i think it means the command prompt. It should be in Start under accessories and you should see command prompt and that should open your "console box"

2)Given the sets X ={24k +7 : k is an element of Z} , Y = {4n+3 : n is an element of Z}, V={6m+1 : m is an element of Z} , prove that X "is a subset of" Y and X "is a subset of" V but Y "is NOT a subset of" V .

3)If A, B, C are sets such that A "is a subset of" B and B "is a subset of" C , prove that A "is a subset of" C.

4) Is it true that if P(A) = P(B) for two sets A, B then A = B ?

Please give a reason and conclusion for each of the above as I am finding it very difficult to understand my teacher's silly notes!! thank you!!!

List all the elements of A * B where A = {a,b,c} and B = {1,2}.?
1) AXB is the set of ordered pairs (x, y) such that x is in A and y is in B.

AXB = {(a,1), (a,2), (b,1), (b,2), (c,1), (c,2)}

2)

X "is a subset of" Y : let a be an element of x.

Then a = 24K+7 = 24k + 4 + 3 = 4(6k + 1) + 3

Therefore a is an element of Y.

X "is a subset of" V : let b be an element of x.

Then b = 24K+7 = 24k + 6 + 1 = 6(4k + 1) + 1

Therefore b is an element of V.

Y "is NOT a subset of" V: 3 is an element of Y since 3 = 4(0)+3 but 3 is not an element of V because if you solve for m in 3=6m+1, you get m= 1/3 which is not Z.

3) You need to show that if a is in A, then it is in C too.

Choose a in A, then it must be in B as well.

Since B "is a subset of" C, then a also has to be in C. This proves that A "is a subset of" C.

4) I think it is true.

Without setting-up a 501(c)(3), how can I collect tax-deductible contributions to assist in charity efforts?

I have researched setting up a 501(c)(3) non-profit which seems to be long and cumbersome. I was wondering how people seem to get set-up very quickly to collect tax-deductible contributions to assist others who unexpectedly have tragedies. Like "Mr. Johnson died last week. A tax-deductible contribution to his children can be made by sending a check to...."

There's no way that's a 501(c)(3) setup that quickly.

Without setting-up a 501(c)(3), how can I collect tax-deductible contributions to assist in charity efforts?
Contributions to a specific person are not tax deductible, so if you see a notation like you describe someplace, it's not true and if you donate then end up audited, it'll be disallowed.

If n(C)=5, find n(D) and what other relationships exists between sets C and D?

d=6

If n(C)=5, find n(D) and what other relationships exists between sets C and D?
There is not enough information here, but one can come up with different postulates.

For example, let say that n represents a mathematical equation. If you had used n(x) = 5, most would have no problems saying that the function is a horizontal line crossing the y-axis at (0,5). I can just assume that n(C) is the same mathematical equation using C as the variable rather than x. Likewise for n(D). n(x)=n(C)=n(D)=5

Another example would be to consider n as a function that takes a capital alphabetic character and returns an integer. C is the 3rd member of the alphabet and the function returns the 3rd member of the set of odd integers. If the function n is a correlation between the set of alphabetic characters and the set of odd numbers, one could postulate that n(D) = 7.

If n(C)=5 find n(D)? What other relationships exists between sets C and D?

I think that is-

No of element of set C=5 then find the No of elements in D

This doesn't make any sense. Without proper Data Maths can never be solved

If n(C)=5, find n(D)? What other relationship exists between sets C and D?

A,Band C are three sets.C is a subset of B ;n(AuBuC)=58; n(BuC)=35;n(BnC)=22;?

n(AnC)=10; n(A)=40 and n(B')=23 Draw a venn diagram to represent the information

A,Band C are three sets.C is a subset of B ;n(AuBuC)=58; n(BuC)=35;n(BnC)=22;?
Draw the Venn diagram with 3 circles A , B, and C overlapping.

since C is a subset of B then there are 22 items in C that are also in B (from B and C = 22 ) to place these into your diagram. of these 22 there will be 10 of the items in set A as A intersects C = 10...so place these into set A and set B and set C ==%26gt; this is the intersection of all the sets ! the remaining 12 go into C and B intersection. Since the complement of B is 23 that means that 23 items could be in A (or outside and in the universal set) and not in either C or B (cover up set B and then see where these 23 items will be placed in your drawing,,,not in C as that is all in B remember? so some of these 23 will be in A or some outside all the sets in the universal set...put them in A for now...then we will find out ...Since set A has 40 and B 35 there could be 13 in A and B (we already have 10 there in the intersection of all three sets and 13 in A and B but not C). The last piece is coming now...B union C has 35 so this means that there are 13 in B that are also in A ....and A has 40 (add in the intersection of all three and you will see what is missing ...there are 4 more in A that are not in B or in C) if there is a total of 58 in all then there must be 6 items floating outside of these sets in the universal set (check this from the complement of B)

The diagram should be completed now....when working a Venn Diagram it usually is best to start in the center at the intersection of all sets...then work out with the intersections of the sets 2 at a time and finally each set and then the remaining items that are not in any of the sets but are in the universal set .

This may sound confusing but if you draw the Venn and work it out from the inside and label as you go along..use a pencil as you may erase sometimes... :-) This will work.

Good Luck !

Is frequent on and off of A/c through thermostat by setting on low temp will consume more electricity.?

Will it damage the compressor of a/c if we keep the setting at low temp. means if the room temp it 35 deg. and we set the temperature to 27 deg. it will cause the a/c to frequently on and off after reaching 2 deg below i.e 25 and will start again at 29 deg .will it consume more electricity. as it is said that a/c draws more electricity and load at the time starting.

Is frequent on and off of A/c through thermostat by setting on low temp will consume more electricity.?
Yes it can consume more power to switch on and off, but normally the power consumption with the constant on off is still less than continuous running due to the shear hours in operation. As for the compressor- this will not be an issue- do have it maintained regularly though.

I highly recommend taking steps to further insulate your home where possible, ie

Shut all doors and windows

Close curtains

For particularly sunny windows organise a sunshade or external blinds.

Alternatively can you change the setting on the aircon to give a slighly larger lee-way on the temp?
Reply:If your home is well insulated, the trick is to dial down your AC late at night when it's cool outside. In the morning, reset the thermostat to a desired temp and leave it alone. Constantly changing the setting is costly and unnecessary.

Is there a way to send an email using C# without setting a SMTP Client?

I’m using .NET 2.0, and I want to send an email using C#. I am using the namespace System.Net.Mail to send email, but as far as I can tell it requiers you to use a SMTP Client. What I need to know is, is there a way to send an email without seting a SMTP Client? I could do this with PHP, but I don’t see how to do it in C#.

Is there a way to send an email using C# without setting a SMTP Client?
Hi,

You NEED an SMTP server to send email regardless of the programming/scripting language. The Send Mail Transport Protocol is the standard used for sending email across the internet.

The reason why this would work in PHP is because the SMTP server is already set on that machine, look at the php.ini and you will see all info. Most server operating systems has an SMTP server set by default, that is why your PHP works. Your webhost already set the SMTP server on your box.

For .NET, most hosts (if your doing web applications) have that already installed, but if your doing a normal application, then you have have an SMTP server to send the email. Usually, programmers supply an option in the program so the user can change the SMTP information so that the program could work. I usually allow the user add his email SMTP information into the settings of the program so that he/she could use the email features.

Good Luck

Let A,B, and C be sets.?

Prove that A is a subset of B iff A-B= empty set.

Let A,B, and C be sets.?
Let "n" denote intersection, "u" denote union, and B' be the complement of B. By definition, A-B = A n B'

1. Proving =%26gt;

Start with letting A be a subset of B.

Let's try using proof by contradiction here.

Suppose that A-B is nonempty.

Then there exisits an element x such that x is in A-B.

That means that x is in A n B'.

That means that x is in A and x is in B'

Since x is in A, and A is a subset of B, then x is in B.

This is a contradiction, because x cannot be in both B and B'.

So that must mean that A-B = empty set.

2. Proving %26lt;=

Now suppose that A-B = A n B' = empty set.

Let x be in A.

Then x is in (A n B) u (A n B') since A = (A n B) u (A n B').

Then either x is in (A n B) or x is in (A n B').

However x cannot be in A n B' since it is the empty set.

So that must mean that x is in A n B.

Which means that x is in B.

That means that A is a subset of B.
Reply:A-B is well known as A n B'. You should know that, Dr. D. Report It

Reply:A is a subset of B if

A intersect B = A

AunionB = A + B - AintersectB

If A is a subset of B, then

AunionB = B

I'm not sure what your term A-B means.

Suppose A, B, C are sets and consider the function?

(or mappings) f: A -%26gt; B and g: B -%26gt; C.

i. show that if f and g are both injective then so is their composition g*f

ii. show that if f and g are surjective then so is their composition g*f

recall that (g*f)(a)=g(f(a))

Suppose A, B, C are sets and consider the function?
(i) if f and g are injective then f(a) = f(b) iff a=b and g(c) = g(d) iff c=d

hence g(f(a)) = g(f(b)) iff f(a) = f(b) iff a=b

so g*f is injective

(ii) f and g are surjective iff for all b in B there exists a in A such that f(a)=b and similarly the exists b in B such that g(b) = c for all c in C

so for all c in C there exists b in B such that g(b)=c, and for all b in B there exists a in A such that f(a) = b

therefore, for all c in C there exists a in A such that g(f(a)) = c, and g*f is surjective

and as g*f is both surjective and injective it is also bijective!

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?
These are not congruent.

Consider the distributive property...

(A - B) - C = A - B - C

A - (B - C) = A - B + C

I'm trying to think of an example of sets... but I am wondering what your context is... what are you working on?

In an elementary mathematics situation...

consider A = 10, B = 5 and C = 2

(A - B) - C = (10 - 5) - 2 = 5 - 2 = 3

and

A - B - C = 10 - 5 - 2 = 5 - 2 = 3

A - (B - C) = 10 - (5 - 2) = 10 - 3 = 7

and

A - B + C = 10 - 5 + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7

I'm not sure if this helps, if can elaborate on the context I might be able to shed more light onto the subject... :-)
Reply:No, they are not equal. It is an order of operations problem.
Reply:No , because The associative property of real numbers which means ( Changing the grouping does not affect the result ) is not applied on subtraction

Just addition and Multiplication
Reply:Let m be an element of Sets A and C, but not of set B.

Then m cannot belong to (A-B)-C:

m belongs to A and m does not belong to B, means that m belongs to (A-B). However, because m also belongs to C, it is removed when performing the -C operation.

However, m belongs to A - (B-C):

m belongs to C but not to B, therefore, m does not belong to (B-C).

m belongs to A and it is not removed when performing the - (B-C) operation.

Therefore:

m belongs to A - (B - C),

but

m does not belong to (A - B) - C

Let A be the set of all positive integers from 1 to 9

Let B be the odd subset of A.

Let C be the even subset of A.

Let m=2 (or any other even element of A)

A={1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}

B={1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

C={2, 4, 6, 8}

(A-B) = {2, 4, 6, 8}

(A-B)-C = {2, 4, 6, 8} - {2, 4, 6, 8} = empty set

(m does not belong to the empty set)

(B-C) = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

because no elements of C are contained in B, subtracting C from B has no effect on B; (B-C) = B

A-(B-C) = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9} - {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} =

A-(B-C) = {2, 4, 6, 8} = C

C is not equal to the empty set

(m belongs to C)
Reply:A-B = A%26amp;B'

(A-B)-C = (A%26amp;B')-C=(A%26amp;B')%26amp;C' = A%26amp;B'%26amp;C'

A-(B-C) = A%26amp;(B-C)' = A%26amp;(B%26amp;C')' = A%26amp;(B'||C) = (A%26amp;B'||A%26amp;C)

SO THEY ARE NOT EQUAL
Reply:no they arent.

the parentheses changes everything.

see i will use the nubers 7(a) 6(b) and 5(c) as an example.

(a-b)-c

(7-6)-5

you always have to do parentheses first.

soo 7-6 is 1.

you can take the parentheses away.

1-5= -4

the next one...

a-(b-c)

7-(6-5)

once again...parentheses first.

soo 6-5 is 1.

7-1 is 6.

see? perentheses does count.

the first one was -4 and the second one was 6.

hope this helped.

sometimes when i explain math, no one gets me.
Reply:No, they're not equal

Say A is 1, B is 2, C is 3. The first problem would go like this

(1 - 2) - 3. You'd do the problem in the parenthesis first, you'd get -1, then -3 more would be -4.

The second equation, would be

1 - (2 - 3)

Again, parenthesis first.. you'd get -1, then minus the 1 on the outside (A) would be -2. Different answers.
Reply:They are not equal.

when we open (A-B)-C it is A-B-C

but when we open A-(B-C) it is A-B+C

minus sign has to be multiplied with +B AND -C, which are in the bracket, and which will become -B+C.

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?

C \ (A and B) = (C \ A) or (C \ B).

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?
Just do a mutual inclusion argument.

Say x is in C \ (A and B). Then x isn't in both A and B, and so in particular must not be in one of them (or if you like, in the complement of one of them). Say x is not in A. Then x is in C\A, and so in (C \ A) or (C \ B). Similarly, if x is not in B, then it is in C\B and also (C \ A) or (C \ B).

Now the other way. Say x is in (C \ A) or (C \ B). If x is in C\A, then x must be in C, but cannot be in A. Therefore x is also not in (A and B), and so x is in C\(A and B). Same thing works if x is in C\B.
Reply:uhh you can try substituting numbers in for the letters like 3, 4, 5 and see if they come out equaling each other.
Reply:Those are letters of the alphabet.

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?

C \ (A or B) = (C \ A) and (C \ B)

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?
That does not look too right. Check it on a Venn diagram.

I'm assuming that or means union;

and means intersection.

C \ (A u B) = C\A u C\B

and C\(AnB) = C\A n C\B

What is cheaper? - Turning off the A/C (air conditioner) or setting it to a higher temperature while gone?

When no one is at home, I set the a/c to "off" and then it turns on about 30-45 minutes before I get home (programmable thermostat). Alternatively, I could set the thermostat to a higher temperature during the day, but I don't want it to run all day even if it is at a higher temperature. However, by turning it off all day, will the a/c consume just as much power when it comes on in the evening to get things cool again? I live in Texas, so summers get really hot! I'm also out of the house for around 10-12 hours during the week. Any advice? Does the opposite hold true in winter???

What is cheaper? - Turning off the A/C (air conditioner) or setting it to a higher temperature while gone?
It is better for you to have it off during the day and come on a short time before you get home. It is harder for your a/c to cycle on and off all day keeping it at 80 something, than to run for 30 min to and hour straight. The same is true with your heater in the winter. The total amount of time the a/c runs is less so it costs less. Use your programmable thermostat how it was designed, don't heat or cool and empty house.
Reply:Unless you have an A/C that is over 15 years old, you should turn it off every time you are gone for more than half an hour. An A/C in good condition should cool off a house in about an hour. A/Cs over 15 years old may not be very efficient and should be turned off.

Leaving the A/C running the whole day only costs you money. Keep in mind that if you have pets, you might consider some sort of way for them to cool off.

If your A/C has a fan only feature, Have it come on after the sun is strongest, so that it will circulate fresh air in the house, and then have the A/C come on 30-45 minutes before you come home.

The same applies for winter except for the fan. There is no need to heat the house if you are not in it.

You'll see a big difference in your utility bill.

Good luck.
Reply:I am also a Texan, so I know how hot summers get. Personally, and I have no firm data to back this up, I leave the thermostat at a higher temperature (usually around 80 degrees during the day) to preserve a moderate level of coolness in the house. I usually run my thermostat at about 70 degrees while I am at home. When I leave for several days, I elevate the temp. to about 85. My bills have been more reasonable running like this rather than shutting it off when I am gone. In winter, I turn the thermostat down to 60 degrees when I leave and then run it at about 68-70 when I get home. Our winters have been pretty mild lately.
Reply:I would raise the temperature when absent. It'll keep the humidity down.

But this isn't easy to provide an all knowing answer. If you have excellent insulation and a pretty tight seal, you could probably save more by shutting it off. But if your home is average, you are just going to have to suck the heat out of the walls, ceilings and furniture if you don't keep some kind of minimal cooling going.

And yes, opposite for winter. Plus in winter you might not want it completely off if your pipes could freeze.

Another aspect is comfort, perhaps more so with heat. Yes, your could drop it down to 55 F when gone. With forced air the room air will heat up quickly. Then the thermostat kicks off. But in mere minutes the cold walls suck in that heat and you will feel chilly. Then the heater kicks on again. In my small office building it takes about an hour for the walls/furniture and floor to reach ambient and for me to feel "comfortable" during the periods the heater is not running.
Reply:I have mine turned down during the day and and night when we are sleeping heat wise and it saves money. but for the A/C i didn't see much change either way in my bill by turning it up as to turning it off so do what you will i leave mine to when its about 75 during the day when no one is home and 68-70 when we are home.
Reply:I was told by the electric company to conserve engery turn off all appliances while your gone. If you can set them to come on like your air conditioner before you get home, do that to cool it down. We have central air so it maintains the houses temp. I do keep it warmed in the daytime since we are not here but at 5pm it starts to cool down. In the winter we alway keep the house cooler than in the evening. The thermostate is programmed at 7am to go to 63 degrees. In the evening at 5pm it goes up to 68.
Reply:I would turn it up. Due to the fact you live in TX. IT will help keep the humidity down. My brother used to turn his off, it got old coming home with kids to a hot house in the Summer time.
Reply:Set your a/c to a higher temp. it will use more energy and is harder on the a/c when it has to kick on and off all the time.
Reply:Set it at a higher temp when you are not home so that the a/c can maintain a comfortable temp and so it won't have to work so hard to drop the temp when you get home. starting a/c equipment when your house is hot creates a big load for it, causing it to consume more energy and possibley more wear and tear in the long run.
Reply:Its cheaper to set it at a higher temp. Talk to your local power company about other energy saving tips.
