Let A,B, and C be sets.?

Prove that A is a subset of B iff A-B= empty set.

Let A,B, and C be sets.?
Let "n" denote intersection, "u" denote union, and B' be the complement of B. By definition, A-B = A n B'

1. Proving =%26gt;

Start with letting A be a subset of B.

Let's try using proof by contradiction here.

Suppose that A-B is nonempty.

Then there exisits an element x such that x is in A-B.

That means that x is in A n B'.

That means that x is in A and x is in B'

Since x is in A, and A is a subset of B, then x is in B.

This is a contradiction, because x cannot be in both B and B'.

So that must mean that A-B = empty set.

2. Proving %26lt;=

Now suppose that A-B = A n B' = empty set.

Let x be in A.

Then x is in (A n B) u (A n B') since A = (A n B) u (A n B').

Then either x is in (A n B) or x is in (A n B').

However x cannot be in A n B' since it is the empty set.

So that must mean that x is in A n B.

Which means that x is in B.

That means that A is a subset of B.
Reply:A-B is well known as A n B'. You should know that, Dr. D. Report It

Reply:A is a subset of B if

A intersect B = A

AunionB = A + B - AintersectB

If A is a subset of B, then

AunionB = B

I'm not sure what your term A-B means.

Suppose A, B, C are sets and consider the function?

(or mappings) f: A -%26gt; B and g: B -%26gt; C.

i. show that if f and g are both injective then so is their composition g*f

ii. show that if f and g are surjective then so is their composition g*f

recall that (g*f)(a)=g(f(a))

Suppose A, B, C are sets and consider the function?
(i) if f and g are injective then f(a) = f(b) iff a=b and g(c) = g(d) iff c=d

hence g(f(a)) = g(f(b)) iff f(a) = f(b) iff a=b

so g*f is injective

(ii) f and g are surjective iff for all b in B there exists a in A such that f(a)=b and similarly the exists b in B such that g(b) = c for all c in C

so for all c in C there exists b in B such that g(b)=c, and for all b in B there exists a in A such that f(a) = b

therefore, for all c in C there exists a in A such that g(f(a)) = c, and g*f is surjective

and as g*f is both surjective and injective it is also bijective!

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?

Can anyone find (A - B) - C and A - (B - C). Are these sets equal?
These are not congruent.

Consider the distributive property...

(A - B) - C = A - B - C

A - (B - C) = A - B + C

I'm trying to think of an example of sets... but I am wondering what your context is... what are you working on?

In an elementary mathematics situation...

consider A = 10, B = 5 and C = 2

(A - B) - C = (10 - 5) - 2 = 5 - 2 = 3

and

A - B - C = 10 - 5 - 2 = 5 - 2 = 3

A - (B - C) = 10 - (5 - 2) = 10 - 3 = 7

and

A - B + C = 10 - 5 + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7

I'm not sure if this helps, if can elaborate on the context I might be able to shed more light onto the subject... :-)
Reply:No, they are not equal. It is an order of operations problem.
Reply:No , because The associative property of real numbers which means ( Changing the grouping does not affect the result ) is not applied on subtraction

Just addition and Multiplication
Reply:Let m be an element of Sets A and C, but not of set B.

Then m cannot belong to (A-B)-C:

m belongs to A and m does not belong to B, means that m belongs to (A-B). However, because m also belongs to C, it is removed when performing the -C operation.

However, m belongs to A - (B-C):

m belongs to C but not to B, therefore, m does not belong to (B-C).

m belongs to A and it is not removed when performing the - (B-C) operation.

Therefore:

m belongs to A - (B - C),

but

m does not belong to (A - B) - C

Let A be the set of all positive integers from 1 to 9

Let B be the odd subset of A.

Let C be the even subset of A.

Let m=2 (or any other even element of A)

A={1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}

B={1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

C={2, 4, 6, 8}

(A-B) = {2, 4, 6, 8}

(A-B)-C = {2, 4, 6, 8} - {2, 4, 6, 8} = empty set

(m does not belong to the empty set)

(B-C) = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

because no elements of C are contained in B, subtracting C from B has no effect on B; (B-C) = B

A-(B-C) = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9} - {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} =

A-(B-C) = {2, 4, 6, 8} = C

C is not equal to the empty set

(m belongs to C)
Reply:A-B = A%26amp;B'

(A-B)-C = (A%26amp;B')-C=(A%26amp;B')%26amp;C' = A%26amp;B'%26amp;C'

A-(B-C) = A%26amp;(B-C)' = A%26amp;(B%26amp;C')' = A%26amp;(B'||C) = (A%26amp;B'||A%26amp;C)

SO THEY ARE NOT EQUAL
Reply:no they arent.

the parentheses changes everything.

see i will use the nubers 7(a) 6(b) and 5(c) as an example.

(a-b)-c

(7-6)-5

you always have to do parentheses first.

soo 7-6 is 1.

you can take the parentheses away.

1-5= -4

the next one...

a-(b-c)

7-(6-5)

once again...parentheses first.

soo 6-5 is 1.

7-1 is 6.

see? perentheses does count.

the first one was -4 and the second one was 6.

hope this helped.

sometimes when i explain math, no one gets me.
Reply:No, they're not equal

Say A is 1, B is 2, C is 3. The first problem would go like this

(1 - 2) - 3. You'd do the problem in the parenthesis first, you'd get -1, then -3 more would be -4.

The second equation, would be

1 - (2 - 3)

Again, parenthesis first.. you'd get -1, then minus the 1 on the outside (A) would be -2. Different answers.
Reply:They are not equal.

when we open (A-B)-C it is A-B-C

but when we open A-(B-C) it is A-B+C

minus sign has to be multiplied with +B AND -C, which are in the bracket, and which will become -B+C.

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?

C \ (A and B) = (C \ A) or (C \ B).

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?
Just do a mutual inclusion argument.

Say x is in C \ (A and B). Then x isn't in both A and B, and so in particular must not be in one of them (or if you like, in the complement of one of them). Say x is not in A. Then x is in C\A, and so in (C \ A) or (C \ B). Similarly, if x is not in B, then it is in C\B and also (C \ A) or (C \ B).

Now the other way. Say x is in (C \ A) or (C \ B). If x is in C\A, then x must be in C, but cannot be in A. Therefore x is also not in (A and B), and so x is in C\(A and B). Same thing works if x is in C\B.
Reply:uhh you can try substituting numbers in for the letters like 3, 4, 5 and see if they come out equaling each other.
Reply:Those are letters of the alphabet.

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?

C \ (A or B) = (C \ A) and (C \ B)

If A, B, and C are sets, prove that:?
That does not look too right. Check it on a Venn diagram.

I'm assuming that or means union;

and means intersection.

C \ (A u B) = C\A u C\B

and C\(AnB) = C\A n C\B

What is cheaper? - Turning off the A/C (air conditioner) or setting it to a higher temperature while gone?

When no one is at home, I set the a/c to "off" and then it turns on about 30-45 minutes before I get home (programmable thermostat). Alternatively, I could set the thermostat to a higher temperature during the day, but I don't want it to run all day even if it is at a higher temperature. However, by turning it off all day, will the a/c consume just as much power when it comes on in the evening to get things cool again? I live in Texas, so summers get really hot! I'm also out of the house for around 10-12 hours during the week. Any advice? Does the opposite hold true in winter???

What is cheaper? - Turning off the A/C (air conditioner) or setting it to a higher temperature while gone?
It is better for you to have it off during the day and come on a short time before you get home. It is harder for your a/c to cycle on and off all day keeping it at 80 something, than to run for 30 min to and hour straight. The same is true with your heater in the winter. The total amount of time the a/c runs is less so it costs less. Use your programmable thermostat how it was designed, don't heat or cool and empty house.
Reply:Unless you have an A/C that is over 15 years old, you should turn it off every time you are gone for more than half an hour. An A/C in good condition should cool off a house in about an hour. A/Cs over 15 years old may not be very efficient and should be turned off.

Leaving the A/C running the whole day only costs you money. Keep in mind that if you have pets, you might consider some sort of way for them to cool off.

If your A/C has a fan only feature, Have it come on after the sun is strongest, so that it will circulate fresh air in the house, and then have the A/C come on 30-45 minutes before you come home.

The same applies for winter except for the fan. There is no need to heat the house if you are not in it.

You'll see a big difference in your utility bill.

Good luck.
Reply:I am also a Texan, so I know how hot summers get. Personally, and I have no firm data to back this up, I leave the thermostat at a higher temperature (usually around 80 degrees during the day) to preserve a moderate level of coolness in the house. I usually run my thermostat at about 70 degrees while I am at home. When I leave for several days, I elevate the temp. to about 85. My bills have been more reasonable running like this rather than shutting it off when I am gone. In winter, I turn the thermostat down to 60 degrees when I leave and then run it at about 68-70 when I get home. Our winters have been pretty mild lately.
Reply:I would raise the temperature when absent. It'll keep the humidity down.

But this isn't easy to provide an all knowing answer. If you have excellent insulation and a pretty tight seal, you could probably save more by shutting it off. But if your home is average, you are just going to have to suck the heat out of the walls, ceilings and furniture if you don't keep some kind of minimal cooling going.

And yes, opposite for winter. Plus in winter you might not want it completely off if your pipes could freeze.

Another aspect is comfort, perhaps more so with heat. Yes, your could drop it down to 55 F when gone. With forced air the room air will heat up quickly. Then the thermostat kicks off. But in mere minutes the cold walls suck in that heat and you will feel chilly. Then the heater kicks on again. In my small office building it takes about an hour for the walls/furniture and floor to reach ambient and for me to feel "comfortable" during the periods the heater is not running.
Reply:I have mine turned down during the day and and night when we are sleeping heat wise and it saves money. but for the A/C i didn't see much change either way in my bill by turning it up as to turning it off so do what you will i leave mine to when its about 75 during the day when no one is home and 68-70 when we are home.
Reply:I was told by the electric company to conserve engery turn off all appliances while your gone. If you can set them to come on like your air conditioner before you get home, do that to cool it down. We have central air so it maintains the houses temp. I do keep it warmed in the daytime since we are not here but at 5pm it starts to cool down. In the winter we alway keep the house cooler than in the evening. The thermostate is programmed at 7am to go to 63 degrees. In the evening at 5pm it goes up to 68.
Reply:I would turn it up. Due to the fact you live in TX. IT will help keep the humidity down. My brother used to turn his off, it got old coming home with kids to a hot house in the Summer time.
Reply:Set your a/c to a higher temp. it will use more energy and is harder on the a/c when it has to kick on and off all the time.
Reply:Set it at a higher temp when you are not home so that the a/c can maintain a comfortable temp and so it won't have to work so hard to drop the temp when you get home. starting a/c equipment when your house is hot creates a big load for it, causing it to consume more energy and possibley more wear and tear in the long run.
Reply:Its cheaper to set it at a higher temp. Talk to your local power company about other energy saving tips.

Which is most appropriate? C language. Please read fully?

This

main()

{

int c;

c = getchar();

while (c != EOF) {

putchar(c);

c = getchar();

}

}

or

main()

{

int c;

while (c != EOF) {

c = getchar();

putchar(c);

}

}

*****************************

only change being getchar(); is not used outside loop.

I just wanted to know which is better.

in the first case we are using same statement outside loop and we are not putting EOF character in file(assume that its a file)

The later case is straight forward; here we are putting character into file and then we are checking for EOF. The only problem being c in not initialized. This problem can be solved by setting c=0 or so when its declared.

But i want to know which is better among there.

Please no jokes :)

thanks

Which is most appropriate? C language. Please read fully?
I would go with the second one, You are going to enter the loop even if the value of C is not declared until the loop has been entered. I would have to say there is a 1 in a 99999999999 chance that the deceleration of int c is going to be assigned the value of EOF when it is declared (if i remember right, as soon as your compiler reads int c, there is a random value assigned to it) ........however (i'm more of a C++ man) i'm pretty sure this is legal in C++ and prolly C

main()

{

while(getchar() != EOF){

putchar(getchar());

}:

};

i'm not %100 on this (cuz i'm drunk) but getchar() is going to return a value, because it is not calling by reference, so if you are setting C = to the value returned by the function getchar, why not just throw the method ghetchar() in the parameter??? the compiler is going to look at the value returned by getchar() before the function....(ex: if x = 1 (before the function call) random_function(++x) is going to take the value 2......

If I was you, I would try and get rid of the variable C....
Reply:In the first program, you check for an EOF after the getchar() function, but before the putchar() function.

The second program 'gets' a character and 'puts' it before checking for the EOF. So, the place where you're putting the characters will also get the EOF tacked onto the end. Also, you need to initialize the 'c' variable.

If you want the EOF included (as if you were outputting text to a file), then you need to add an extra putchar() function after the 'while' loop in the first program.

If you want the EOF included, but you're not sure which program is more efficient, then I can't tell you which program is more efficient. Without re-writing the 'while' loop in the program (like a couple other answerers correctly did), one program uses an extra getchar() and the other program would use an extra putchar() - it is a case of whether getchar() has more code overhead than putchar(). The only way to find out would be to disassemble both functions. I know Assembly language, so I can do this, but I don't feel like doing it right now.

Ha Ha.
Reply:this one is better than above 2 programs:

main()

{

int c;

while ((c = getchar()) != EOF)

{

putchar(c);

}

}

How do you crack the Rail Fence Cypher? (While programming in C?)?

OK, to fill you in on what the Rail Fence Cypher does, it goes like this

Take the plain text message

ABCDEFGHIJKL

Then put it in to a table, thus,

A D G J

B E H J

C F I L

Then read the rows to get the encrypted message

A D G J B E H J C F I L

I'm programming in C, so any C solutions, hints, tips, would be brilliant

Mine uses a fixed three rows, so you could have

A B C D E F G H I J L K M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

A D G J M P S V Y

B E H K N Q T W Z

C F I L O R U X

Final Encrypted message:

A D G J M P S V Y B E H K N Q T W Z C F I L O R U X

And anything in between.

The alphabet is used for example purposes.

More letters can be used.

My arrays in C are set to 3 rows by 25 columns for encrypting the message, and 75 elements for getting the plain text message.

My code is available at http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddzf6sz8_9...

How do you crack the Rail Fence Cypher? (While programming in C?)?
Hi

I have attach a snippet of code that may help.

It is not concise but may help with the logic.

A couple of tips:

Try not to use 'goto'.

In the 'menu' procedure have a look at using 'switch' and 'case' rather than 'if' statements

Compact the code a bit, there is a lot of empty space.

Do you need to find out what OS the user is using I would suggest that they would know that otherwise they would not be able to compile it in the first place!

Enjoy!!!!

Witchy roommates and the A/C?

I am a student living in a dorm at the university. I had the misfortune of being put into a 4 bedroom suite with 3 bestfriends. These girls are extremly catty and rude and inconsiderate. Over the past couple of weeks there has been a tug of war with the A/C in our dorm. They like it to be barely on which makes the suite (in my opinion) very hot and stuffy. I like the A/C to be on all of the time. I like it cold. When I turn it on they turn in off and it goes back and forth. I even put on half way and they still turn it off. So one day when I went to turn it on I see a post it that says " Please leave the A/C on its current setting. Not Cold! thanks." Now I ignored because I think that its unfair for them to just decide what the A/C is set on. I think its rude of them to leave a note instead of just talking to me. I am willing to comprimise but their little note clearly says they aren't. I know this is petty but I am not going to be pushed around. What should I do? Who is right?

Witchy roommates and the A/C?
No one is "right" until you can sit down, perhaps with your RA present, and discuss the issue.

Life is all about compromise. The sooner you all learn this [especially the other 3, it sounds like] the better off you will be.

The personality of the girls ["catty" etc.] has no bearing on the argument. Don't bring it up unless you want to weaken your point. Be factual.

[Hint: they can always put on a sweater, but you can't cool down in any easy way without the A/C.]

Good luck!
Reply:Hot weather only lasts for a while. If you're not willing to discuss it with them, buy a small to medium sized fan and put it on yourself when you are in the common areas. If you have a window in your room, which I'm assuming is private, get a window AC unit.

They were rude to leave the note and not discuss it but that is the risk you run with so many room mates!
Reply:OK, so you're the only one who likes it cold. I think you may be outvoted 3 to 1. Since your in the minority I think you need to talk to them. They left you a note but you didn't talk to them either before changing it.

You could always change rooms.
Reply:you have lots of options -- they make personal airconditioners -- they are 300-400 and will cool your room. its not the old-school window unit -- it sits in the corner.

you could request to be moved as you are in an akward situation. the thermostat won't really make for a valid reason for you to move but if they are directly bothering you then move.

you can always try to open converstations every chance you get. usually you catch more flies with honey. plan a suite dinner party. a really simple way to start conversation is borrow something -- just a pen or something -- nothing personal. you have to talk to borrow it and you can continue conversation when you give it back. i really think part of the problem is no open communication. you are the odd one out -- so you have to be the one try a little harder.

you can also try divide and conquer -- order a pizza with the one you think is the least betchy.
Reply:Maybe to keep the peace, you could buy a window unit.
Reply:be the bigger person and speak up, say "i want to compromise esp since we both have different preferences do u think we could all agree to leave it on ___ setting so we can all live comfortably in the dorm" leave it at that and try to be considerate u all have to live together so try to get along as much as u can!
Reply:My husband and I have this same exact war. I am always hot and he is not; therefore we invested in a small portable A/C so that I can have it on me when I fall asleep and he can shut it off when he comes in without freezing my children.
Reply:I would purchase a protable one and turn it on at your hearts desire in your space..

What is Another way to describe the set (- 4 , 7 )?

Out of the following

a) The set of all numbers which are greater than -4 or less than 7.

b) The set of all numbers that are less than 7 or greater than - 4

The set of all numbers which are greater than - 4 and less than 7.

c) The set of all numbers which are greater than - 4 and greater than 7

d) The set of all numbers that are less than 7 and less than - 4

What is Another way to describe the set (- 4 , 7 )?
The set is (-4 , 7) meaning all the numbers which lie in the range of -4 to +7 excluding -4 and +7 i..e, the set is: {-3,-2,-1.....,4,5,6}. Described as: the set of all numbers which are greater than - 4 and less than 7.

If the set was [-4,7] instead, then the answer would have been: The set of all numbers which are greater than or equal to- 4 and less than or equal to 7.
Reply:A

I'm taking this class now and "A" is the correct answer!
Reply:The set of all numbers which are greater than - 4 and less than 7.

It actually doesn't sound like any of you are willing to compromise. Compromise means meeting in the middle, not one or the other of you getting your way. Since the three of them all agree on the settings, you are really outnumbered here. Instead of creating continued tension over the thermostat, why don't you buy a portable fan or an air conditioner for your room. Then everyone can have the temperature they want.

Setting up dev c++ with settings for directx?

ok i downloaded directx (august 2007 release). and i have dev c++ most recent compiler. how do I set up dev c++ to work with directx?

Setting up dev c++ with settings for directx?
I assume that you mean DirectX SDK. I downloaded DirectX 9.0 SDK (June 2005) and got most of what I wanted from MS example programs, including compile commands used via Command Prompt. My program (benchmark) is videod3d9_32 and videod3d9_64 which, along with source code, is in:

Compile command for 32 bit vwersion is:

Which of the following is an empty set?

Doing set theory in maths and stuck.. I guessed b and c but not sure...

a. The set of men with no teeth

b. The set of months of the year with 32 days

c. The set of straight lines drawn on the surface of a sphere

d. The set of prime numbers between 35 and 43

Which of the following is an empty set?
The answer is 'b'. You can draw straight lines on the surface of a sphere. They are called tangents (with only one point touching the surface)
Reply:a) Unfortunately, there are men with no teeth, sad but true. We should do our best to avoid this in the name of human solidarity, but the fact is that , for now, this is not an empty set.

b) No month of the year has 32 days, so we have the empty set.

c) In the scope of Euclidean geometry, no line drawn on the surface of a sphere is a straight line. So, we have the empty set ( I suppose you mean the entire line lies on the sphere's surface)

d) Clearly this is not the empty set, because 37 and 41 are prime and lie between 35 and 43.
Reply:I'm in favor of both (b) and (c). In a section on set theory, I doubt they're trying to throw you a curve ball on non-Euclidean geometry. I think we can safely assume that straight means straight in the Euclidean sense, and that "on the sphere" means that the entire line lies completely on the sphere.

I would only argue the semantics of "straight line" in a class where geometry is the focus.
Reply:The answer is b. Months either have 30 or 31 days. February being the special case in which it has 28 days or 29 days if

it is a leap year.
Reply:It's definitely B.

As for C, one can draw a tangential line on the surface of the sphere.
Reply:b

why dont you look at the answer
Reply:B is the odd one out as all the other choices are at least mildly logical
Reply:Set b is the answer. A straight line can be "bent" but still remain straight in a 2 dimensional form, ie lines of latitude and longitude on the earth. If we were to presume that c was an empty set then we would be denying the existence of non-Euclidean geometry and therefore the existence of the D-circle.
Reply:b - I did set theory with the OU and am 98% sure.

But it was some years ago!

It might be c but, intuatively, b!
Reply:How many Months have 32 days. So the set is empty
Reply:There are no months with 32 days.

As for c, it depends on your definition of a straight line. In some contexts a great circle can be considered a straight line.

15.What's wrong with the call "fopen("c:\newdir\file.dat", "r")"?

Need help in C languauge?
Wow, that's a lot of questions.

1) If you want to cheat, you just read the .c file and display it. To convert an .exe file to source code, you'll need to learn Assembly language. You will have to disassemble the .exe file and then translate the disassembled code to .c source.

2) You can figure out how to do that programmatically if you look at a calendar.

3) You can call other functions within functions, but doing anything else is inefficient.

4) Hint: Learn how binary numbers work and make use of the boolean algebra operators.

5) Learn how to convert binary and hexadecimal numbers into decimal, and then you can figure out the code to do the conversion programmatically. You can also view the documentation on the standard C libraries - some functions can do this for you.

6) Why would you want to do that? That's just stupid. It's possible to do that programmatically, but all that additional code is ridiculous.

7) Look in your compiler's documentation regarding main().

8) Create a structure and make your function so that it accepts a pointer to your structure as an argument. Your function then just fills in the structure members.

9) That depends on the operating system. Read the documentation on the functions that reside in your compiler's libraries. Your compiler might have the spawn() function. If you're working in DOS, then you might have an Exec function if your compiler comes with a DOS library.

10) Initialize a pointer with your specific memory address. Then you just access the memory that the pointer variable points to as you normally do.

Near Pointer:

unsigned char *video=2334; /* offset 2334 */

Far Pointer:

unsigned char far *video=(char *) 0xa0000000; /* segment A000, offset 0 */

11) Some 16 bit compilers support the 'huge' data type. However, the machine code that is produced to access 'huge' data is inefficient. It is better to just split your arrays if they exceed 64k.

12) See answer 9.

13) See answer 9.

14) See answer 9.

15) You're missing the ';' character at the end of the line, and you didn't allocate a variable of the 'FILE' structure type and specify it in the fopen() line. Stream functions require the 'FILE' structure. Also, you didn't put an extra '\' character after the '\' slashes in your string.

Example:

FILE *in;

in = fopen( "c:\\myfile.txt", "r");

Suppose that A is the set of sophomores at your school and B is the set of students in discrete structures...?

Please help with my homework. I'm confused.

Suppose that A is the set of sophomores at your school and B is the set of students in discrete structures at your school. Express each of these sets in terms of A and B.

a) The set of sophomores taking discrete structures.__________________

b) The set of sophomores at your school who are not taking discrete math._________________

c) The set of students at your school who are either sophomores or are taking discrete math._____________________

d) The set of students at your school who either are not sophomores or are not taking discrete math___________________

Suppose that A is the set of sophomores at your school and B is the set of students in discrete structures...?
a) A intersect B (A and B)

b) A intersect Bnot (A and B' )

c) A union B (A or B)

d) Anot union Bnot (A' or B' )

Hope this helps!
Reply:a) This would be the students who are both sophomores and taking the class, so they're in both sets A and B. So the answer is

A∩B

b) If B is the set of students taking the class, then ~B (the complement of B) are the students not taking it. So the sophmores not taking it is represented by the set

A∩(~B)

c) This is everybody in both sets, so take the union: A U B.

d) The set of students who aren't sophomores is ~A, so the answer is

~A U (~B).
Reply:sure. A is the total # of sophomores, and B is the total students (of all grades) taking discrete structures,

so

a) the set that includes set A and set B (intersection)

which is the absolute value of #of Set B - Set A

b) the number who are not taking it is Set A - the answer to the question before this

c) that's the union of set A and set B, - number in both. So, in this case it's set A + set B - the answer to a)

d) impossible with the given information right now, since you don't know how many kids are in the other grades

Given the universal set S is the set of all real numbers, illustrate the relationship between the following?

sets using a Venn Diagram:

A= {x|set of all odd numbers}

B= {x|set of all even numbers}

C= {x|set of all positive numbers}

D= {x|set of all real numbers such that {-4 greater than or equal to x less than or equal to 4}

Given the universal set S is the set of all real numbers, illustrate the relationship between the following?
All A,B,C and D are subsets of S.

There are members of S not included in either 4.

A and B are disjoint (they do not overlap)

C is as large as half of S and overlaps exactly half of A, half of B and half of D.

D overlaps a small part of the intersection between A and C, a small part of the intersection between B and C.and has a part in S that is not in C

The a/c on my Grand Prix isn't working...?

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix. When I try to turn on my a/c it will only come on sometimes. It comes on more often on the blower setting 5 than any other. If it's night time and the a/c is set to on but not functioning, my lights (which are automatic) won't come on until I turn the a/c off. Also, the rear window defroster button on the same panel as the a/c won't work if the a/c is switched on but not functioning. A mechanic already replaced my blower motor and resistor and it didn't fix anything. He wants to replace my ignition switch now, but it just doesn't make sense to me that it works sometimes and other times it doesn't. Any suggestions?

The a/c on my Grand Prix isn't working...?
sounds like a wiring harness has gone bad to me, either that, or you have a ground problem. You will need to pull the A/C control panel and start looking for wiring problems, melted. or pinched. Good Luck
Reply:Your problem is your ignition switch! That was very common in those cars as your controls for the A/C heater and such was ran thru that switch. They always went bad. Your mechanic is right on that but I would challenge them on the cost since they did not fix this the first time as a simple voltage test and proper diagnostics would have told them the ignition switch is bad.

Hope this helps!

I need help proving something in set theory...?

Prove: If A, B, C are sets, then (A-B) X C = (AXC) - (BXC), where "A-B" is the set containing all elements of A that are not in B, and AXC denotes the Cartesian product between A and C. Obviously, to prove this, one must show that for any ordered pair (x,y), if it is contained in the set on the left side of the equation, it is necessarily in the one on the right, and vice versa. The proof seems almost obvious. I just want someone to write down a set of logical steps showing how they arrive at the above statement.

I need help proving something in set theory...?
let (x,y) element of (A-B)XC

so, x element of (A-B) AND y elemnt of C

so x element of A AND x not element of B AND y element of C

so (x element of A AND y element of C) AND (x not element of B)

so (x,y) element of (AXC) AND (x,y) not elelmet of (BXC) ****

so (x,y) element of (AXC) - (BXC)

First part is done.

noe, let,

(x,y) element of (AXC)-(BXC)

so (x,y) element of (AXC) AND NOT ( (x,y) element of( BXC))

so x element of A AND y element of C AND NOT (x element of B AND y element of C)

so x element of A AND y element of C AND ( x not element of B OR y not element of C)

so x element of A AND y element of C AND x not element of B ####

so (x,y) element of (A-B)XC

Now if you have confusion anywhere that is probably the lines marked with * and #.

Lets dicuss this

*******

if x is not element of be it can not be element of BXC, whtever happens to y and C.

This should be our ststement OR some other statement.

But that statement is contradiction, so we may ignore that part.

Is it possible to set up a current primary drive (with Windows XP on it), as a secondary?

I want to replace my current primary drive (C:) with a new hard drive. I don't want to format drive C: until I have installed and set up the new hard drive. (Partly so I can look at current drive C and make sure I'm putting all the correct programs back on, as well as copying over old files to the new computer). Can I just change the jumpers on current drive C to make it a slave to the new hard drive? Will that work with Windows XP still installed on it and everything set up with C: "paths"? Is it possible to do a disk copy from current C to new C if new C is set up as a secondary? Just trying to figure out how I can do this without erasing the current C.

Thanks so much!!

Is it possible to set up a current primary drive (with Windows XP on it), as a secondary?
You can use Norton Ghost to retain your current (C:) drive. Either place both hard disks in the computer and use a (Partition to Partition) copy in Ghost, or (Partition to Image), then restore the image to your new drive.

Have fun and Good Luck !
Reply:Hi. The boot sequence is set in BIOS. Make sure you have the jumpers on the back set to "MA" and "SL" first.

Define the injections f:A -> B by f(a)=4a and g:B -> A by g(b)=b. Find the set Cand the ultimate bijection h

(1)-Let A be the integers and let B be the even integers. Define the injections f:A -%26gt; B by f(a)=4a and g:B -%26gt; A by g(b)=b. Find the set C and the ultimate bijection h.

(2)-Show that any real interval [a,b] with b%26gt;a has the cardinality of the continuum.

Define the injections f:A -%26gt; B by f(a)=4a and g:B -%26gt; A by g(b)=b. Find the set Cand the ultimate bijection h
I assume the ultimate bijection h(x)=f(g(x)) and C is the range of h. Accordingly,

h(x)=f(g(x))=4g(x)=4x

C=h(A)=h(integers)

={...,-8,-4,0,4,8,...}

=multiples of 4

h is injective because it is the composition of two injections

h is surjective because C=h(domain of h)=h(A)

Thus h is a bijection.

Geometry question with a^2 + b^2 = c^2?

dont worry , this is not a homework question, its a i took this back in high school now i actually need to use it for woodwork, lol.

Assume you have a perfect right triangle. Both sides are 5 inches long.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

5^2 + 5^2 = c^2

c^2 = 50

**** assume when u say radical its is V-- ****

c = 50^(.5) or expressed as V--50

When I take 50^(.5) i end up with 7.071 ~~

So according to this the length of c is 7.071~~ inches

(A) is this the correct length of c?

(B) if i want to set c ( the hypotenuse) to a certain value of a right triangle, what is the formula to figure out the sides length.

this is my crack at it

Assume the hypotenuse is 10

a^2 + b^2 = 10

a = b

a^2 + a^2 = 10

2(a^2) = 10

????????

Geometry question with a^2 + b^2 = c^2?
a) correct

b) that leads to a^2 = 10/2 = 5

therefore a = V5

(a calculator would reveal 2 . something here)

dont be afraid of strange numbers in your results - that happens in real life examples more than you think. In school textbook examples the questions are geared to give answers that are well rounded and 'nice' because the focus is on conveying the method of calculation

some good whole number right angled triangles are

(a, b, c)

3,4,5

6,8,10

9,12,15

etc multiplying the first set by the same number each time

another common one is

5,12,13
Reply:Assume the hypotenuse is 10

a^2 + b^2 = 10 %26lt;%26lt;-------remember the formula is

a^2+b^2=c^2

so if you want your hyp to be 10 then the equation would be

a^2+b^2=10^2

a^2+b^2=100

then continue as you did above, and you will get it right.

7.071 is the correct answer for the first part
Reply:A) The length c should be 7.071 inches. Since 1/16 of an inch is .0625, you want a bit more than 7 1/16 inches.

B) Notice that you should have 10^2=100, not just 10. Next, get a^2=100/2=50, so

a=sqrt(50)=7.071.
Reply:You almost have it but you forgot to square the hypotenuse.

so 2(a^2) = 10^2 = 100

a^2 = 50

a = 50 ^ (0.5)
Reply:In the first scenario, c = 7.071~~ inches.

In the 2nd scenario, you are on the right track (if you want both sides to be equal).

2(a^2) = 10

(2(a^2))/2 = 10/2

a^2 = 5

a = 2.236 inches
Reply:1.) Your calculations are correct and precise at the answer.

2.) The formula (based on your calculations) are "If a=b, then a squ.=b squ., so a squ +b squ= 2 a squ., so c squ. = 2 a squ. then, .5 c squ = a squ, in short. a squ will equal one-half of c squ.

Is it better to set my crossover that goes from 50-300 low or high for 2 12" kicker C that go from 27 to 500Hz
you are overdriving the amp if it breaks up at 13.

turn down the input sensitivity on the amp untill the whole system distorts at the same level.

what frequency is the crossover to the rest of the system, lets say everything under 200 hz to the subs, and caps on the door speakers/tweeters to keep anything under 200 out of them as a start.... I like 150 hz on my subs.
Reply:That will depend on your musical taste. If you like a deep strong bass lower the frequencies, if you have high pitched notes set it to high frequencies. 40-60 Hz is ok.

If the sound start to distortionate just after 13 it means your amplifier gain is too high.

To set correctly do the following steps:

1. Completely lower the amplifier gain, set crossover, equalizer to zero gain flat.

2. Slowly start to increase the volume untill you start to hear some distortion, then backup unti the distortion fades away. Now you have reached the max volume you can turn it up without distortion.

3. go back to the amp and slowly start to increase the gain until distortion is heared, repeat the same procedure

4. Now just adjust the bass, treble, mid, to your musical taste.
Reply:Here is a guide that will help you set the gain correctly http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php...

What are a set of well-defined steps for performing a task or solving a problem called in c++?

An Algorithm

(no relation to the 2000 presidential candidate who invented the Internet).

What are a set of well-defined steps for performing a task or solving a problem called in c++?
That would depend on what you are doing. If you are creating ("writing") new software as part of the task, that is called "Coding". If you happen to be looking at code that has already been written and doing some small changes so that is works better, that is a subset of coding, called "Debugging". If you are just looking at code to get ideas about how certain things can be done , then that is called "Reading". If you are doing a combination of all these things, that is an industry called "Software Development". Some people call the hard part of coding "Hacking". "Kernel Hacking" is something I could never do, for example, but some people, like Linus Torvalds "creator of Linux", have no problem with it.

And ya, a series of steps, often in a computer language like "BASIC", "ALGOL", "Pascal", "Python", "Java" or "C++" is an Algorithm.

How do you set and get the item data of an item in a listbox control in .NET (C#)?

you can use the %26lt;listboxControlID%26gt;.Items attribute...

note that Items is a list..so you can access it using indexes..

such as %26lt;listboxControlID%26gt;.Items[0].. and from there you can use the different methods such as %26lt;listboxControlID%26gt;.Items.Add()

And to get the values..you can use %26lt;listboxControlID%26gt;.SelectedItem

or you can loop through it

foreach(ListItem li in %26lt;listboxControlID%26gt;.Items)

{

//li.Text

}

Hope this helps..

Find the GFC of each set a)20x,10x^3,8x^2 b)12a,18^3,6a^2 c)10x^2,15x,25x d)21a^2,35a^2,7a?

I think is GCF:

The Greatest Common Factor is the largest number that is a common factor of two or more numbers.

Example: 20x, 10x^3, 8x^2

GCF = 2x

If you need the credit card verifaction because the email address is for someone underage then you can either borrow the card from a trusted friend/family member - if it is for verification then the card will not be charged. if that isn't an option, you can do what so many other people have done and lie about the age I guess.

How to prove that the set of all bijections from the reals to the reals have cardinality c = card. of reals?

it isn't true. Sorry.

as you noted, the cardinality is actually 2^c (or larger).

but we know that FOR ANY SET S, if n is the cardinality of s, then s %26lt; 2^s. So the cardinality in question is %26gt;= 2^c %26gt;c, so can't equal c.

Or did I misunderstand your comment?

EDIT:Danny: we don't know for sure (without some other methods) that the set of bijections has the same cardinality as the set of all functions from a set to itself, since the bijections make a subset.

In fact, for finite cardinality sets, this is not true. Bijections of an n-element set have cardinality n!, while the set of all functions from an n element set to itself has cardinality n^n.

How to prove that the set of all bijections from the reals to the reals have cardinality c = card. of reals?
c = 2^(N), where N is the cardinality of natural numners.

Now Nc = c.

The cardinality of the set or all real functions of a real variable has cardinality c^c, by definition

Now c^c = (2^N)^c = 2^(Nc) = 2^c.

If we assume the continuum hypothesis, yes c%26lt;2^c

OK, I think I have a proof. Let S be the set of all bijections from real to reals. I show that the cardinality of S is at least 2^c. Since by above the cardinality is at most 2^c will imply that is equal with 2^c.

Let P the set of subsets of R.

Let f: P ---%26gt; S, defined in the following way:

If A is in P then let g be a bijection of A which doesn't have a fixed point i.e. there is no x such that g(x) = x

We define f(a) = g(a) if a is in A

f(a) = a if a is not in A.

We still have to define the image of empty set and the images of sets which have only one element. But this can be easily done (exercise)

Finally f is injective so the cardinality of S is at least cardinality of P i.e. cardinality of S is at least 2^c.
Reply:I don't know if it helps, but I saw on Wikipedia that the cardinal of continuous functions from R to R is c while the cardinal of all functions is 2^c. But I don't know where to go from there. One would need to construct a bijection from one of these sets to the set of bijectives functions.

A uncountable set of +reals.Show for any real R,there finitly distinct a,b,c,.. in A s.t a+b+c+..>=R?

For the sake of future attempters, the QUESTION is:

A is an infinite set of positive real numbers. Show that, for any real R, there exist finite and distinct real numbers a,b,c,... in A such that a + b + c + ... %26gt;= R

Answer:

By the condition of the problem,

R lies in A.

Say r is the positive integer closest to R, such that r%26gt;R.

Now, since A is the set of positive reals, one subset of the

set is the set of positive integers.

Now, by the principle of finite induction

if S is the set of positive integers {1,2,3,...,k} then whenever k lies in S, k+1 also lies in S.

Hence, we state r+1 lies in the set A.

Now since R%26lt;r, from the above statement, it follows that

R+1 lies in A. ... (I)

Let us now assume that, for a real R, and for finite and distinct a,b,c,.....such that a,b,c,.... includes the entire set A except R,

a + b + c + ... %26lt; R

This implies

a%26lt;R

b%26lt;R

c%26lt;R .......... (II)

..

..

But as stated in (I), the real number R+1 also lies in set A

Statements (II), however, inevitably yield

R+1 %26lt; R , a contradiction.

Hence, our initial assumption

a+b+c +... %26lt; R is incorrect.

Thus, there exists atleast one set of finite and distinct reals

a,b,c, such that

a+b+c+... %26gt;=R

--------------------------------------...

Correction:

Yes, I do agree with Ron, my proof is valid only for the special case wherein :

1. R lies in A.

2. A is the entire set of real numbers.

Kindly excuse me for the errors, as I attempted the proof in a state of stupor and torpor... :)

The complete proof requires additional consideration as follows:

Firstly consider that the set A bound by its largest and smallest element, occupies a band on the number line.

1. If R lies outside of A and lies to the left of the A-band, then the proof is trivial. (this accounts for R%26lt;0 too)

2. If R%26gt;0 and lies to the right of the A-band,

then, it is possible to find

n such that n = R/X where X is the smallest element of the set A. let N be the positive integer closest to and larger than n.

Now, since R is a finite real number, n and thus N are also finite.

Hence the addition of the first N numbers of the set A arranged in ascending order should give u the required result.

3. If R lies within the A-band (either within or without A), the proof easily follows from the reasoning used in 2 above.

Hope this goes towards clarifying.

A uncountable set of +reals.Show for any real R,there finitly distinct a,b,c,.. in A s.t a+b+c+..%26gt;=R?
Homework.

Let A_n={x in A: x%26gt;1/n}.

Some A_n must be uncountable.
Reply:For future voters, read the question carefully.

The long answer above is incorrect: R can be negative, but A is restricted to positive reals, so R is not necessarily in A as was assumed. The answerer also erroneously equated an uncountably infinite set of positive reals with the entire set of positive reals. The open real interval (0,1) is an uncountably infinite set of positive reals and 3 is a positive real not in that set.

The short answer given by mathematician above is concise and a good lead for homework.
Reply:Sorry, I can't answer this without knowing what the set A consists of.

I'm using ms C++ 6.0 to wright C but I keep getting errors, what do I do to set it up?

Those are linker errors.

You have declared three functions:

void playgame();

void loadgame();

void playmultiplayer();

But you have never created bodies for them.

The linker is telling you that you have called these routines, but it doesn't know were they are to insert the appropriate addresses.

If you have defined these in other files, then the problem is that the aren't included in your project. i.e. don't appear in the make file.

If you started out by creating a new project, you can add the files to the project by clicking on Project/Add to Project/files. Then select the files you need to add.

If you didn't start out by creating a project, click File/New/(Project Tab) and select Win32 Console application. Set the target directory to be somewhere other than where your existing code is located.

On the next screen select "A simple application".

That will give you a file with an empty main() where you can swap in your code. Then you can easily add other files to the project.

well, i dont know what complier u r using, but usualy, when u choose to make a new project, u can check a box to choose c rather than c++ , or something liek that. most c++ compliers have a c option, but using c when u can write c++ is pritty much pointless

When i set a combobox's SelectedValue it dosnt work/update?? any help? C# visual studio?

i have retrived values from a database and now populating a form with the info i got 2 combo box's that i would like to popluate with the correct values, acording to the data. however, even if the selectedvalue, selectedindex, or selectedtext is changed, when the form is shown/drawn the combo box's still stay at the first entry from the datasource,

public frmMov(string title, string year, int ratingid, int formatid, string rating, string format)

{

InitializeComponent();

txtTitle.Text = title;

txtYear.Text = Convert.ToString(year);

cmbRating.SelectedValue = ratingid;

cmbFormat.SelectedValue = formatid;

}

why wont it change when the form is drawn am i missing somthing simple?

When i set a combobox's SelectedValue it dosnt work/update?? any help? C# visual studio?
Did you try to store your data(which you have retrieve from the DB) into the variables that you have declared ? If yes, then the below code should work.

if you need to populate the combo box, you need to do this:

cmbRating.Items.Add(ratingid);

cmbFormat.Items.Add(formatid);

If No,

then you should create an arraylist to store the values from DB, loop thru it, then populate ur data in.

hope this helps.

If you smoke cigarettes around a p.c...How much life will you take from the whole set-up?

years, months,weeks...?

If you smoke cigarettes around a p.c...How much life will you take from the whole set-up?
The biggest potential problem with smoking near a PC is actually data damage to the hard disk. Here's why: When your hard disk spins, the heads float above the surface of the platters with a clearance of 0.3 to 0.6 microns. They do not touch the surface of the hard disk.

A human hair is 100 microns across, so the space between the heads and the platter is obviously small. A smoke particle can be anywhere between 25 and 60 microns across. That's small enough to get through the breather filter in the hard drive case and certainly large enough to scratch the surface of the platter when it impacts the head at 7200 rpm.

If you think of the smoke particles as abrasive in nature, they will eventually wear off the magnetic coating of the platters, resulting in data loss.

The smoke will also eventually form a coating on the lenses of the optical drives, creating read errors. You might also see poor electrical contacts on the edge connectors of expansion cards.

How long will it take? How much do you smoke?

Edit having read the ridiculous post above mine: A PC can't blow air out without pulling air in from somewhere. The fact is that the cooling fan exhausts air out the back, which means it has to suck air in through the front - the cracks and orifices around the drive bays.
Reply:it doesnt take up any of the pc's life- the pc spits out heated air to cool the processor and takes in cool air. as hot air rises above cool air, your computer wont 'inhale' the smoke so it does absolutely nothing.

the only time smoking will damage the computer is if you continously drop hot ash on the keyboard resulting in the keyboard not functioning properly or if you deliberalty put out the cigarette on the pc obviously.

other than that your pc will be absolutely fine.
Reply:Really I've never tried anything like that.

I would imagine it would be almost harmless, maybe taking a few days off. The only thing the air does is prevents dust and cools your system, so I would say you may have to clean it more often, but that's it.
Reply:i not think it take anythin off the life u pc.....but it take a bit off ur life......is filthy habit u know :) x

How can I get/set information from a Save As dialog of another application in c#/c++?

I want to make an application who can detect if the application that has the focus has a SaveAs dialog opened, and if the name of the file already exists to automaticaly change it into something else, and put the new name of the file in the SaveAs dialog of that application, so when I press save I will not get that message: "The file already exists! Do you want to replace it? "

How can I get/set information from a Save As dialog of another application in c#/c++?
At the API level, the operating system is designed to prevent applications from messing with each other's data. You might have more luck with a macro language, such as the type you use to automate common tasks.

How does a player expand in lineup availability? When set as a SF, but is playing as a C.?

I am looking at a player who is only available as a small forward in my fantasy league. He has been playing at the center position.

How does a player expand in lineup availability? When set as a SF, but is playing as a C.?
I'm not sure what the minimum is, but there is a minimum amount of games they have to start at a position before they are available in that position for fantasy. Its just like in baseball when a SS plays 3b sometimes. They have to start at that position so many games before becoming eligible. Check your League Settings.
Reply:I think the player has to start 5 games at the position.
Reply:Usually the player will get eligibility when he either plays 10 games at that position or if he starts 5 games at that position, this is for Yahoo fantasy basketball

Other websites that offer fantasy basketball might have different eligibilty rules, so check around and ask other managers if they know your leagues position eligibilty rules

Prove that the set {x,e^x,e^-x} is linearly independent in C(R)?

We must show that, if a, b and c are real numbers such that

a x + b e^x + ce^(-x) = 0 (1) for every real x, then a = b = c = 0.

Putting x = 0, we conclude that

b + c = 0 =%26gt; c = -b.

Plugging in (1), it follows that

a x + b(e^x - e^(-x)) = 0 for every real x. This means that the function g given by

g(x) = a x + b(e^x - e^(-x)) = a x + 2b sinh(x) is identically 0. Hence, g' must be identically 0 too, so that we have

g'(x) = a + 2b cosh(x) = 0 for every real x

Suppose b ≠ 0 . Then, since cosh takes on every real value on [1, ∞), it follows g' takes on every real value on [a - 2b, ∞ ), if b %26gt; 0, or on (- ∞ a - 2b], if b %26lt; 0. In either case g' is not identically zero, so that we must have b = 0. This implies that g'(x) = a is identically zero, which, of course, implies a = 0,

So, a = 0, b= 0 and c = -b = 0. This shows {x,e^x,e^-x} is a linearly independent set in C(R).

Prove that the set {x,e^x,e^-x} is linearly independent in C(R)?
Suppose a*x+b*exp(x)+c*exp(-x)=0 for all real x. Taking the derivative twice , we get

a+b*exp(x)-c*exp(-x)=0

and

b*exp(x)+c*exp(-x)=0. With the first equation, this implies a*x=0 hence a=0. With the second equation, we get 2*b*exp(x)=0 which implies b=0. Finally, the second equation and a=b=0 implies c=0, and we are done.
