years, months,weeks...?

The biggest potential problem with smoking near a PC is actually data damage to the hard disk. Here's why: When your hard disk spins, the heads float above the surface of the platters with a clearance of 0.3 to 0.6 microns. They do not touch the surface of the hard disk.

A human hair is 100 microns across, so the space between the heads and the platter is obviously small. A smoke particle can be anywhere between 25 and 60 microns across. That's small enough to get through the breather filter in the hard drive case and certainly large enough to scratch the surface of the platter when it impacts the head at 7200 rpm.

If you think of the smoke particles as abrasive in nature, they will eventually wear off the magnetic coating of the platters, resulting in data loss.

The smoke will also eventually form a coating on the lenses of the optical drives, creating read errors. You might also see poor electrical contacts on the edge connectors of expansion cards.

How long will it take? How much do you smoke?

Edit having read the ridiculous post above mine: A PC can't blow air out without pulling air in from somewhere. The fact is that the cooling fan exhausts air out the back, which means it has to suck air in through the front - the cracks and orifices around the drive bays.
Reply:it doesnt take up any of the pc's life- the pc spits out heated air to cool the processor and takes in cool air. as hot air rises above cool air, your computer wont 'inhale' the smoke so it does absolutely nothing.

the only time smoking will damage the computer is if you continously drop hot ash on the keyboard resulting in the keyboard not functioning properly or if you deliberalty put out the cigarette on the pc obviously.

other than that your pc will be absolutely fine.
Reply:Really I've never tried anything like that.

I would imagine it would be almost harmless, maybe taking a few days off. The only thing the air does is prevents dust and cools your system, so I would say you may have to clean it more often, but that's it.
Reply:i not think it take anythin off the life u pc.....but it take a bit off ur life......is filthy habit u know :) x
