99 GMC a/c not blowing out of dash vents - door stuck?

I have read a lot about the subject, and decided to replace the control a/c/heater panel, but with no luck. My a/c will blow hot and cold, but it was stuck on defrost/foot vents. I looked to the right of the gas pedal under the dash and saw a geared lever that looked like it was supposed to move, so i moved it with a screwdriver and viola! , my a/c started working. I set it back to defrost, and the door(lever) got stuck again. Does anyone know what this door/ lever is and if there is any way to fix this?? Any help is appreciated!!

Check those two spring links, make sure they look like this. They can only be assembled one way, and they break quite often. You can take that actuator off and switch modes on the controller, it should roll back and forth.
Reply:Its going to defrost because of a vacuum leak. Find the source of the leak and repair it. Your heater will then function as normal. The motors are vacuum actuated meaning the motor that switches the mode door and the blend door, if there is a vacuum leak, it defaults to a defrost position.

Look at all the vacuum hoses and listen for a hissing noise to pinpoint leaks.
Reply:Gm has had a problem with this for years, my 88 Chevy does the same thing, I have found no cure for it, lack of use seems to make it happen.
