See, if you are writing a story from Coraline's point of View then you cannot count down. Because COraline wont be knowing that it is 1000 BC. How would she know that 1000 years from now Jesus would be born?
She would simply say that this year, next year or a thousand years frm now ... like that.
But if you are writing from the perspective of someone who knows that Jesus was born(like yourself) you may narrate it like Coraline, a sea goddess, lived in 1000BC.

If I started a story at 40,000 BCE and I wanted to move forward then I would start counting it down.
